Virgin internet being pants for any1 else?

I've been doing some research on this, and basically, the simple fact is that over a 24 hour period you'll be able to download a lot more for the same cost.

My migration away from Virgin Media has now been completed, these results i have got are not bad for this time of day, better than Virgin anyway. -

Does anyone know if I will need to restart my modem for the 20mb to kick in? This used to be the case over the years when I've upgraded but I can't find anything on the VM site that confirms this :)

You shouldnt have to but you will get the config file faster if you do manually reboot as it forces the cable modem to redownload the config file instead of waiting a pre-determined length of time

Yer you need to restart your modem. I am on 20mb, but only getting 10mb. They havnt started rolling out in my are yet.

Just been upgraded to 20mb.

Currently pulling c. 15mb from usenet :approve: Time will tell how reliable it is though

My upgrade to 20mb is complete but I'm awaiting the replacement modem Virgin are sending me to mae full use of it.

TBH those speed tests mean nowt. I have tried a few this morning. The maximum was 12mb and the minumum was 5mb. However, before and after the tests (not at the same time), usenet has been feeding me at a pretty steady 15-16mb.

It's all about the usenet. Speed tests are for pub talk ;)

Ye but your always gonna get a faster speed on usenet (multi-threaded) than you are a single web connection ;)

Usually (under Blueyonder) Edinburgh was one of the first to be upgraded.. it appears we are now one of the last :(

Perhaps, but it matters not. Usenet is the only reason I am on XL anyway. My modem is feeding me at 15mb, 1 connection or 1000, I care not a jot :D

:)

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE PM ME

With instructions on what i should say and who to speak to if i wanna get upgraded free to the XL BB package.. because ever since they took over NTL its been w**k service and poor connection.

Or at least how i can waiver the disconnection fee.

Jeez what happened to your username colour Dave??

The green was ok but that red is just mental on my screen. At the risk of sounding like I'm mentioning another thread, that makes me feel like I've been sniffing charlie :(

XL is a price tier. You won't get a free upgrade unless you just phone them and b**ch at them with valid reasons.

I have valid reasons!

- They introduced a crappy download cap
- My internet is always slow
- I always get disconnected from online games
- The speeds are unpredictable and unreliable
- Im unhappy with the recent downtime.

There is no cap at all. You can download as much as you like all the time, but if you are too heavy during peak times they will reduce your speed during that time.

Your other issues do need sorting out. Are you sure they are Virgins problems? If they are then hopefully they will fix them, but upgrading to XL will not fix any of the issues you mention.

are you using the blue screen? the green was bad on the white one but i'm not sure i like this shade of red either, its to dull IMO.

Pink would be nice......;)

All virgins problems. Network is fine.

Well, its 700mb between 4pm and 12am... as soon as I reach that, limited to a measley 2mb (and the net is buggy and generally too slow!). With 4 computers in the house, it doesnt take long to reach 700mb of download.

I Consider that pretty much a limit! since everyone either works/has school so only uses the net from 4pm onwards anyway!

Upgrading will solve it. Well have minimum 10mb (even limited that will still be 5mb, around what we SHOULD be getting now).

Sounds like you have issues then. Your best bet is to just phone them up?

PS. if 700mb peak before throttling isn't enough for you (and it wouldn't be for me) then you need the XL service.

Free of charge Sky BB. No complaints, works a treat. Only slightly noticeably slower than my old (upto) 8mbps bulldog connection. No time outs or owt.

Why do people pay for internet connections again?

why do people pay £45 a month on tv?;)

360ms is getting on forn half a second. If you had that latency in games you'd be a nightmare. The download seems crap.

I still say the speed tests mean sod all though. What can you actually download at from a fast server. I think this the era of usenet. 20mb+ pipes are rarely going to get maxed by most normal web servers. Although most speed tests should max you out, there are too many variables.

I dont know why so many people moan about download restrictions. Its pretty bloody hard to download 3gb consistently every day unless you are downloading tons of movies etc which im guessing most people wont pay for anyway.

If you are taking the p1ss you deserve to have your speed cut. If you use it normally then you will have no issues.

Virgin will always be able to do the fastest broadband packages for residential customers due to them using fibre optic cables and not the crappy ones BT uses in its network.

I now work for virgin (no i wont get you anything cheap or give a crap when you moan about their service as I'm not at work when i'm here) and could get my 20mb BB, TV and phone for £10 per month but i'm not in a cable area :D bugger

NO!

1... its only 3gb on the highest packaged.. 700mb on mine, and even less on the lower package.

2... whos to say how we should use our internet? if you pay for unlimited, thats what you should expect. I know no one truely does unlimited... but i mean.. come on... NTL never had this stuff, and now that virgin take them over its suddenly a problem? pfft

People moan because the customer service is crap, they are constantly changing there T's and C's without informing us and many other things!

Virgin didnt "take them over" it is just a rebrand of the name. Branson has shares in it now but the majority of the board are still ex NTL and telewest so that has nothing to do with it.

700mb is still quite high for your average user over that period of time. if you have higher needs there are other packages available. You will not be throttled or cut off immediatly, you would most likely receive communication to discuss the issues. as has been stated, it will only affect the top few % of users, and it is to make it fairer to everyone.

Customer service has improved since the rebrand and is continuing to improve. They are doing a lot of retraining and take on board the feedback they receive. Not everyone there is bad, you only hear about the bad stories, nobody comments when they get good service

Thats me finished for the night, i havent got my work head on anymore.

n.b i have used my 5 a day so this is in reply to the post below. Virgin as a company dont directly own virgin media. they have put their name to it and bought shares but are not in direct control. As I say, Virgin are implementing a lot of changes at the moment which will show improvements in customer service over the next couple of months

Thats irrelivant. Its now owned by virgin, they decide how to run it and hence the huge change in conditions, service quality and the such.

One more time.

There is no cap at all. You can download whatever you like. If you download more than your tarrifs limit during peak times, that day, your speed will be cut until midnight, that day. Then it goes back up again adn you can download as hard as you possibly can until the next peak time.

Basically you can queue up 1000000000000000GB and it will just slow down between 16:00 & 00:00. You can download more now over 24 hours than you could before, but for 8 of those hours your speed might be cut down in order to make the service useable for everyone.
