Void Warrenty?

Quick question,

I've got a new shape Clio Extreme (56 plate). Had it a year now and the headunit is doing my head in. Can't play mp3's/or display track titles so i've stuck my old headunit in which already sounds alot better.

Has this just ruined my warrenty? I've spoken to a few garages who all say "as long as you don't cut any cables then you are fine".

Does this also still apply if I wired my old amp and sub providing I do a nice neat job without cutting wires?

Thank You

It's only a year old.

technically if you've tampered with it , you can void your warrenty as the dealers will use that as an excuse not to fix the problem which could have been your fault to start of with .....

Trick is to do everything so you can remove it without leaving any effidence you'd done anything.

Fudge sake tho.

Seems to me that the majority of people who own a new car will swap the headunit if they felt the need to. People who have a £150-200 headunit gathering dust from the old car wanting to put it to better use.

So if my engine starts playing up or the wipers 6months down the road stop working then it's down to me swapping the headunit?

Arg, makes me soo angry.

How many people have a different headunit, and how many of those car's are still under warrenty?

I can see their point if it has an effect within the first week, e.g things you go to use simply arent working then you might have a case against it. Otherwise, things that work then stop working at a later date is crap.

nah buddy , they will hold the aftermarket item responsible for the its problems .....

you can still claim everything else , just not things linked directly to the head unit ;)

Ok, well if the speakers blow or what ever, thats fine - i'll buy replacements. Im worried that my car breaks down with engine problems a year after installing an amp and it gets towed back to the garage that they won't fix it. Giving me a £1000 bill for something not related to it.

Same for servicing, do I then rip it all out - service it - put it all back?

Btw, thanks for the advice so far. I need a clearer picture of what these dealers are like. They seem all very nice now, but they will take ya for ever penny it sounds like.

you should be ok , take it the dealers , play dumb they will let you know what is wrong and if you covered under warrenty for the repair ;)

you still get the choice thereafter

When I had it serviced the first time, I mentioned a naff speaker. Their replied

"Well, we'll have to test that and make sure you havent turned it up to loud"

I thought to myself, jesus its the original headunit and some cheapy door speakers. If they have that sort of attitude :S

my reply would have been b****cks ....lol

.....you dont get nothing for not trying mate , they have a budget limit given towards warrenty claims iirc .

I'll take photos of the installation, get witnesses to sign to say they have seen it being fitted and working correctly. Date it all, keep receipts and then if the wheels come off it's not my fault.

lmao indeed. "Our sensor's detected you pushed it upto 16!"

:dead:

Btw, anyone here got a sub or amp fitted in a car still under warrenty?

My driving school clio 57 reg, has a head unit, 2 x amps, 4 x 6"x9"'s and a 12" sub, my local dealer didnt mind when i had a claim on a faulty clutch master...

They even moved some off my amp wires out of few and drilled me a proper hole for my wiring with a nice grommet to match...
didnt even charge me for it.

Changing a head unit etc wont invalid a mechanical warrenty...

Wooah awesome driving instructor!

Do ya know whether the new shape clio's come with the rear speaker cables in place? Cuz when I brought it, I had the option to get the better headunit and have 4 speakers at a cost. But if the cables are there, then I might just add them?

Btw, thanks sexychrissmith. You had to drill a hole then to get the cables through. Eek, thats probably the part im dredding the most. My old rsi had massive holes already in place heh. :S

Not sure about wires to the back, if not easy job to do, As for drilling a hole there is very little room in the bulk head and it was just easier to dril a hole in the passenger footwell... If you have access to a ramp alot more easier than jack stand's.... a local garage let me borrow a ramp for 5 mins...

I will upload a vid on youtube later and show of my handy work ;-)

Something as simple as a h/unit just swap it back over before taking it in to the dealers if need be.

Just phoned the garage up and they basically said

"Everything is covered but the headunit or any affects it causes".

I asked about amps etc and he said "again, not covered but it will not void the warrenty if the clutch went or anything not related to it"
