If you buy all of it including the wind back spanner and the pulley seal press tools etc all in its about 300 quid full retail price iirc.

suppose if you are planning on doing a few its worth it. but for a one off better to go to a specialist imo

I just borrow a mate of mine's for the f4r when I do them as I don't do more than a couple a year. And for the Williams engine you only need a tool for one idler so I just made one.

You can get a cheap aftermarket set from laser iirc. Don't know how good they are though as only ever done with genuine renault tools personally

I bought one to try and they're okay tbh. The laser kit is okay for occasional use but its not as thick as the genuine tool which can further increase the chance of getting it wrong because the cams do resist and try to turn even when held with the original tool. Yes it bends but only if you're a complete muppet and try using it as a locking tool rather than a position pinning tool.

100% aggree. I had a lazer one and it was fine. As said why would they bend if your doing the job properly . I bought a genuine pulley lock tool tho.

sorry, laser one is crap it does bend (when the pulleys are locked and you are tightening the bolt/nut on the pulleys that turning force alone tries to turn the cams and hence it bends the laser tool, not a problem on the genuine one)

Yeah the key is to lock the pulleys, not try and lock it from the timing end, the ends of the cams are very fragile and the lips that make the two outer semi circles the timing gear goes onto will just bend when you try and undo the dephasor bolt if that is what you try and rely on to lock the cams in place.

*edit*
Replied before I saw Fred's reply, so it sounds like even if the pulleys are locked properly you could still get issues.
You DEFINATELY will if they arent though, Ive seen the results of someone trying to rely on just the timing end to hold them in place, cams were ruined.

Just but the genuine ones, I brought mine from local dealer an with discount they were cheap as chips. Paid for themselves now I've done a few

I agree totally Fred, they can bend the laser tool which is why, just for clarification, I use the genuine MOT1496 unit but I use the AST4923 pulley lock tool as I personally find it better than the OE unit.

But for a DIYer who's only going to use it once or twice attempting their own belt change the Laser D-shoe is okay providing you use it properly and as intended as its only made from mild steel (4mm MS vs 5mm thk HT)

get it done at a specialists. They should know what they are doing and *should* get it right, and if they do fcuk it up, you have a leg to stand on.
