Warning of Aux belt Failure

  Black Gold 182 FF
Hi all,

I know the Aux belt/tensioners etc is supposed to be replaced at 36K (bit of a cheek on Renaults part as this is really a design fault, where the Cam belt can snap if the Aux belt fails). Does anybody know if there is any signs that the belt is about to fail ie noise from tensioner pully or whatever or does it just go? I am at 37K and thinking about having it replaced soon.

Cheers

Aye, you're playing with fire.

90% of the time, they bring the timing belt off too.

£350 for a service or a £2k repair bill.

Hmm, that's a hard one.

Mines coming upto the 36k service in the next couple of months, but I had a new aux kit fitted at about 20k when I had an oil leak from around the cams. Is it still worth me having the whole service, my renault dealer said not to worry and have it done next year?

What I really need is to find a garage I can trust to do it in the North east- half of em I ring up haven't got a clue what i am on about, even a Renault dealer.

They may well have only put a belt on?

Was definitely the whole kit as I went and spoke to the mechanic whilst he was putting it all back to see how he got on as I knew him

I was naughty and didnt get mine done at 36K on My Monaco. Surprsingly the Dealer I took it too, Bristo's in Ipswich said they only "Advise" it to be changed so I didnt get it done.

I got my Cam belt etc done recently on about 62K miles and they did the Aux belt too. Said it was in good condition considering.

So Id say i was lucky as have heard some very contradicting stories.

Very common fault and it will take out your engine. The belt will either snap or a tensioner collapses. In return this throws the aux belt into the path of the cambelt which blows your lump. My advice is change the cambelt, the aux belt and all the tensioners every 36k.

One thing that people also forget is that if you tune your engine you increase the risk of both belts snapping earlier than a standard lump

Also check the water pump pulley for movement - if theres play on the pulley change the water pump to

Is this the same for 172 cups ? As they don't have a tensioner pulley just a manual adjustment for the belt. I had mine changed at 32k, as it was squealing, under warranty but renault only replaced the belt. This they said was standard practice as it had no tensioner !

Conflicting, one dealership adviced at 36k with service £500, other said it would be ok to 60K. Is £500 too much for peace of mind?

yes its just the belt on the cup as there is no ac so no tensoiner, its really easy to do on your own as well should be replaced every 36 k the aux belt

No won't let Braintree or Chelmsford touch my car. I use Darlingtons in Harlow.

The thing is, I've got a brand new still boxed aux kit sitting in the garage that I'll use. I'm just thinking that as I had it done not that long ago I could add it to the 48k service and try and spread the cost

I just had mine changed (aux belt) prematurely at the 30 months servicing because the intervals specified here in Australia are aux belt at 50000km or 3 yrs and then it's supposed to be changed again when the timing belt is done at 100000km or 4yrs. Stupid intervals, but anyway I'll continue...... Mine is still under warranty so I figured I'd get the work done before it expired at the 3 yr mark in case they stuffed anything up ;) , it ended up that the tensioner was replaced under warranty because it was noisy.

Now that mightn't be unusual except my vehicle has only covered 14000km! That's 8700 miles... Mine's driven sensibly, not modded and lives a pampered life in a garage. So be careful if you choose to not change the tensioner.

The Service Manager said it's actually suggested to change the tensioner at the same time.

BTW it works out significantly cheaper for us Aussies to buy the parts from the UK and supply them to the local Renault dealers!?
