Who has any information on what can be done to CUPs to improve performance without invalidating my warranty. You can buy a works package for the Cooper S now that takes it over 200bhp and as long as they fit it your ok, if Renault don’t start doing something like this soon I’m sure people will just start getting frustrated and purchase something else. I’m desperate to start tinkering but I can’t afford not to have a 3-year warranty. HELP.

Who has any information on what can be done to CUPs to improve performance without invalidating my warranty. You can buy a works package for the Cooper S now that takes it over 200bhp and as long as they fit it your ok, if Renault don’t start doing something like this soon I’m sure people will just start getting frustrated and purchase something else. I’m desperate to start tinkering but I can’t afford not to have a 3-year warranty. HELP.
Currently the only warranty approved modification is a competition ECU. You wont see anything like 200bhp from it, but you can notice it. I have one and I am very happy with it and think it makes a very noticeable difference, but everyone else who doesnt have one seems to know better than me!
Search back through the threads or PM me for more info as I am sick of simple queries becoming "Cup is not better that 172" arguments.
Frosty, the R-sport group N ECU is not aproved - I was at my Renault dealer again yesterday and they confirmed that although it is a reno ECU, fitting it on a cup will invalidate ECU-related warranty issues which could be anything!
mo--. Like the rest of us you will have to make that decision. Modify and face losing warranty or at least face arguments with reno, or wait 3 years. Ive told my Reno dealer that I intend doing work on the car and that they could either take the intelligent attitude to take my car (and my money) for servicing and actually working WITH me, or I could simply take the car for servicing elsewhere. They agreed...
One of my considerations before buying the cup is that its so fantastic value for money that Im generally happy with the risk of having to pay to put things right if they fail. Dealing with reputable companies and suppliers, and having clear and achievable objectives for your mods, should minimise the risk of doing something wrong, but if you want 100% guarantee dont touch the car.
Swap your fronts to back as I did on 5k. As long as the wheels are balanced you shouldnt have any problems. Will probably need to replace all four in the summer.
Ill check the ecu warrenty tomorrow with Floyd at reno who has been talking to reno uk and renosport to get approval. R-sport told me this Tuesday that the ecu has still not been approved under warranty by reno uk.

My reno dealer obviously isnt up to speed, it would be nice to get a letter from reno saying group N ecu is approved under warranty.
In any case, I still wouldnt put it in as the guys at R-sport said it couldnt cope with an induction kit Im putting in, and it certainly wont cope with the mods I have planned in the future.
mo-- I havent done anything to mine just yet. Its on 3.2k. K-tec exhaust this week-end, carbon induction kit 2 weeks, unichip end May. Plenty of recent threads on the subject if you do a search.
If you are after doing a few mods to the car, you need look elsewhere than the R-Sport ECU. The main attraction to the R-Sport ECU is the warranty approval, but this warranty will not stand with other mods, thus making it no more apealing than a superchip etc.
The R-Sport ECU is not mappable, its just an identical ECU to whats already in every Cup, but with some slightly different settings stored in the ROM to give different injection and ignition characteristics.
A fully mappable ECU is a better buy if you plan to also fit and exhaust and filter because as stated before (in many other threads and this one) the R-Sport ECU is optimised for an otherwise standard car.
Well I phoned up r-sport and as above they said yes its warranty approved, next step phoned Reno Sheff, please can you book me in to fit an upgrade ECU! Reply "what upgrade ECU" no sorry sir also do you know that this will invalidate your warranty!
So what to do know is the question? Also im fitting a green filter at the mo? Advice welcome!

After pming a few guys on here who have had the r-sport ecu fitted, I decided to go ahead and place my order. I spoke to Jonathon at R-sport on Tuesday this week, and just before I ordered I double-checked the warranty position with him. He said it wasnt an approved upgrade, and that whilst it would be hard for renault to tell the new ecu had been fitted he recommended that I learn how to swap them back over incase I want to get warranty work done. So I havent ordered it now. Does anyone know WTF is going on? Im well confused.
Gary, Ive checked several times with r-sport and my reno dealer. Although the r-sport ecu is a reno group N ecu, it will NOT be covered by reno warranty if you fit it to your cup.
Ive decided to go for a unichip which is reprogrammable for further mods, but costs 200 squids more than a superchip. If your planned upgrades will stop at an induction kit and exhaust, then superchips will produce great results. MY local superchip dealer at power engineering tells me hes done so many versions that if i tell him what make exhaust and IK, he can probably find an ideal program for me. Im only going for a unichip as it gives better flexibility for future work e.g. ported head etc. and can be moved to my next car. I can also unplug it in 30 seconds and the cars back to normal.
If you later go for TBs, youll lose an investment in a superchip and will have to start over again. Even with my unichip - which can in theory control 4 different injectors - I would have to change ECU to an Omex or equivalent to control individual TBs.
So take some time to decide how much youre likely to do and spend on the car, and decide on the best upgrade path based on that. For me, a sensible solution seems to be zorst, IK, unichip, possibly ported head and single larger TB and Ill probably stop there. Thatll see the right side of 200hp. There are many people on the forum with excellent technical qualifications wholl help you make your choices as theyve helped me

Cheers Philip. I only really want a filter element and chip; I may go for an exhaust at some point, but I certainly wont be going further than that, ie head work & TBs. So it sounds like a superchip may be better then? How easy is it to swap back to normal - is a superchip a device or simply a remap of the existing ECU? I live about 4 miles from Demon Tweeks, and theyll fit a superchip for around £300 I think - is that reasonable value?
