Water pump?

Hi, spoke to a mechanic I know and asked him for a price on a Aux and Cam kit + fitting.

He said while he's at it he will fit a new water pump aswell as the aux and cam kit. Says he'll do the whole lot with fitting for £450. Is this a good price and is it a good idea of his to chuck a water pump in aswell?

Good idea to do water pump. But by the same code you should do the dephaser pulley as well.

has he worked on them before? going off that price i'd say no! bit cheap that! does he have the renault only locking tools?

I have to be honest Fred I don't no if he has done the belts on a 182 Clio before. I'd ask him, just feel a fool asking a proffesional "Do you know what your doing?"

If you see what I mean. He's a well established mech who's done bits for me and family etc and I'm sure thousands of other people..

really really make sure he has the renault only tools no matter how silly you feel. If he knows what he is doing he won't think you are stupid for asking. If he looks at you like you are thick walk away. Otherwise you stand a good chance of having someone like fred fit a secondhand engine and another cambelt aux belt and water pump a week later. Generally the consensus on here is to have waterpump done at the same time as they are fairly prone to failure and the extra cost as you have everything apart is minimal compared to the money people end up spending if the waterpump does go.

Interesting, I though the waterpump rarely breaks on 1*2s and there is not much point doing it.

I currently have a clio in the workshop that was built by a championship winning rally cross company (their work is actually amazing)

they'd never done a clio before, bought all the right tools etc etc

it needs a new engine due to their (and they admit it) lack of knowledge with the F4R engine


need i say more? go see a specialist, doesnt even have to be me!

Fred said he's only done 6 F4R water pumps in 10 years or something .... and that they generally arent a service item?!

Also, go to a specialist. Cambelt is hard on the clio, & very easy to bugger up.

F4R water pump is very reliable. More likely to cause an issue by disturbing it in my experiance (fitting cheapo pumps is a bad idea) genuine pump is £70 from memory, then £20 of type d coolant.

I've only had to change 2 F4R pumps due to failures, and they both turned out to be non genuine onces that had already been changed.

It really isnt just "A clio cambelt" as people will think when taking on the job. Oh and if he uses Autodata (like we did with mine) start saving now

and sideways danny has done 2, and that was because someone had replaced the genuine ones with cheap coppies.

Go figure!

Guessing they'd done over 1000 cambelts in that time?
