Water temp sensor

  Clio 182
Got a 172. Can anyone of you wise and knowledgable people tell me how the ecu gets info about engine water temp. Does it come from the sensor that feeds the temp gauge or is there a second sensor. Can I assume that if the gauge is reading around the right temp the ecu is getting the same info. Your help is appreciated - trying to diagnose a lumpy tickover.

The ECU gets it from the coolant temp sensor just behind the thermostat housing and then that information is sent to the dash.

If you have an obd reader you can display live temperature.
