Weird rattle in head?

  CLS320 with a D6
Time to start looking at a temporary engine then I think while we rebuild this one

That won't be as bad as you think. Have you Run it without the aux belt in place to eliminate the auxcillary components?

  GSXR + KDX220
I had a little end go on my engine, it sounded very similar, although mine was doing about 4k at the time. Need to get the head off to confirm though.

as above, eliminate the aux stuff before pulling the engine, but I doubt they would make that noise tbh!

It only makes a noise on idle, if you raise the revs a touch its fine. Car drives fine and not down on power. I've removed the little rubber blanking cap next to the TB to raise the idle slightly and sounds fine now. Any issues keeping this uncapped?

personally wouldn't drive it full stop ! I've had a few where a water pump pulley has come loose and caused funny noises but that doesn't sound healthy to me ! If it throws a rod out the block its game over! Least things are salavagable at the moment ! Could be few things needs checking out it won't go away it will only get worse and more expensive !

Thinking of taking it to ashford Motorsport to have a look as its very close. Anyone recommend them?

Hoping its just a dephaser. Appears to be some fresh oil on inside of o/s engine mount cover that surround the dephaser. Possibly s**t it's pants? I know it hasn't been changed in a while

Dephasers as a rule don't sound so knocky like yours, more diesel like. That sounds more like failure on the way, rather than just some slop in a dephaser :(

but hey, first time for everything....

Probably not what you want to hear :quiet:

From that vid it sounds like its from the wrong end to be dephaser related.

When my little end went, if I was driving along on partial throttle it was normal and quiet but if I let off and coasted it gear it'd make a light tapping noise, and then go again as soon as I touched the throttle.

A week or so later and it SUDDENLY got very loud at about 70mph and then bang, it went!! Lesson learnt, dont ignore it thinking its something minor like I did

Oh that sucks balls. Can only hope it's minor. Ill try at get it diagnosed tomorrow at ashford Motorsport.

It only really makes any noise on idle just above 5 on rev counter. Driving in any situation it's fine. Really sounds like something is loose somewhere and rattling as the idle is very rough plus my mounts are all solid so nothing to absorb the sheer power ;)

You tried driving quite close to a wall in gear, and coming on and off the throttle to see it rattles like mine did?

As obviously when driving normally, the piston is under load so it wont "slap about" if it was the little end, but not when letting off the throttle. Hence mine rattling!

I've still got the piston and rod as a memento lol....

  Clio 172 phase 1
Had a fiesta do this once... Ran out of oil on a motorway with no services for miles topped it up drove home and then bang... Nice fat hole in the front of the block with bits of conrod in my rad...

Found the problem yo. Tracked noise to the alternator vibrating against the acc below it (pas/ac) can't remember which one. I have changed the aux belt etc..in the last few months so set about making sure everything was right. Busted out the jubilee clip and tensioned up the tensioner to release the pressure on belt. Undone top bolt of alternator attached to diagonal bar to block and found there's no bolt in bottom of alternator. Must pop to Renault tomorrow to get one. Repositioned alternator as far towards front of car and done up said bolt. Remove jubilee clip and voila. Not rattling anymore! Will pickup bolt and fit tomorrow if available. So glad it wasn't anything more. Took ages to find problem. Was only moving maybe half a mil back and forth
