Weird rumbling noise on idle

Had a search but meh.

On idle i get a weird rumbling type noise.

Only does it on idle, once revving it goes away and when driving it goes away when i lift on and coast in gear.

Could it be the water pump, or the AUX belt tensioner?

Thoughts welcome :)

You still have ac don't you? Sounds like it could possibly be the water pump, i doubt it's the guide as you had a kit fitted at cambelt time!

If you want to pop over tomorrow for us to have a listen your welcome!!

Steve.

EDIT : Re - reading that, i wouldn't put dephaser pulley out of the equation either! If it goes once revs are picked up!

water pump from Renault around £50 off the top of my head!

But from the local motor factors, £18 LOL!

will require a new aux belt kit aswell... plus the labour to fit it all

I was going to suggest checking the belt tension....

hard to tell without seeing / hearing the noise

Could be dephaser. The noise goes above 2k, then sounds diesel ish on idle once warm

hmmmmm mine was really bad, sounded like that. Only did it once up to temp though........ Steve changed the pulley last weekend and cured it 100%. If yours does it from cold could be something else?

Silly thing to check, but one to take out of the equation.... check too see if all your spark plugs are tightened up correctly..

25 Nm :)

Mine was making a "dephaser" type noise a few weeks ago, turned out to be a loose plug on number 3!

I thought dephaser would make a sort of knocking noise.

This completely goes above 1500rpm, only does it on idle and from cold aswell.

Does get worse when revved

Ill check in the morning Gray :)

I'm just presuming by the way, have you seen DrRollos videos when he had a knackered dephaser? Does sound similar to that and that tapping/rattling noise disappeared after it was rev'd once the engine noise drowned it out.

DrRollos broken pulley was the exhaust cam pulley NOT THE DEPHASER

Could it be the alternator?

Past few weeks its been losing the trip mileage on the clocks, when i have the heaters on, and rear sccreen heater the revs drop and light dim then go back.

Just listened to the noise properly, and its definatley coming from the front of the car.

Will go out tommorow and check again, is there anything i can do to rule out things?

Its going to Birchdown on Monday, but i want to know what is it really, CBA with the dephaser going, any symptons i can rule out for it not being this?

Sorry to spam your thread mate but my car lost the trip mileage the other day. I was well confused! My car seems to be in fine health too. You think its down to the alternator not doing its job properly? My car starts fine so its def a weird one!

Take the aux belt off and run it for a few seconds, see if it still does it. If so, you can rule out alternator, water pump, AC pump and PS pump. Dont run it for long though as you'll cook it.

Get a drain plug set, release the tensioner (be careful it doesn't snap the tab off) and just pull the belt out. Will take you half hour at the most!
