well p***ed off!!

just came back from a trip down my local renault dealer about the fact that my 172 hasnt got an alarm, only to be told by a service guy that the car is an import and it would cost me £342 to have one fitted, my insurance company were not aware that there was no alarm, so i thought id ring up my insurance pretending to be someone else and had a quote for £1682 :( because there is no alarm fitted, when i pay a little over £900 at the moment.

as you can understand i am one pissed off clio owner, im so angry that i wasnt told the car was an import i know i didnt buy the car from renault but its only a year old, im thinking about going to trading standards and try and get the garage that i bought it from to pay for the alarm because i was told it was a uk spec car, what do you think my chances are??

if it was sold as seen mate u r buggered check ure recipt see if it has any details that may be of help have u got any documentaion that would sugest the car has an alarm

this import issue happened to me and is still in the process of being sorted out. problems are different tho.

if they have not specifically told you it was an import which they were aware of you may have a case, especially if it was sold as a uk car which has an alarm

If Renault UK were advised & the garage that supplied your motor is a franchised Renault garage they would be well in the sh*t. Despite EU legislation the manufacturers still hold the cards & would probably threaten the garage with removal of their franchise.

Alright that may not help you in this case, but on the bright side my 172 is an import & for £250 I had a Sigma M32 fitted which uses the existing keyfob. I am well happy with it (carry out a search for Sigma to see my write up).

Also make sure you register your vehicle with Renault UK to obtain your full 3 years warranty. Again carry out a search for EU import warranty for details.

Hope this helps.

i wasnt told it was an import and it wasnt a franchised dealership it was just a normal garage, i think i will contact trading standards anyway to see what they say about it,

ah fcuk it, does anyone want to buy an immaculate 172 import???

What about the price??? did it reflect the fact it was an import?? I dont know what official UK cars and Import cars go for 2nd hand tho.

The only difference is the alarm anyway...and my insurance were not interested in whether it had one or not, only wanted to know it had an immobiliser. Mine was £275 and used the same key fob...and got the 3year warranty too when applied for. I was thinking of fitting a tracker but the ins co wasnt interested in those either.

Not trying to belittle your problem but id be pissed too if I thought it was official....get them to fit an alarm FOC for you and a free service.

bought it on finance, not sure about the second hand price on an import i assume it would be the same????

doubt they will fit it for free because i didnt buy it from a renault dealer it was bought by an independant garage, im sure ill sort something

ill give them sh*t.

cheers lads

I dont think a garage can really sell a car as "sold as seen" can it? I think they are bound by law to tell you if the car is an import, there would be a price difference too, contact the Finance company aswell and explain what has happened as they carry a lot of weight as they want there money, they own your car and if you decided to stop your payments they would seize the car but seeing as it is an import they themselves would struggle to get a decent price for it.

for the record, all 172s leave the factory with an immobiliser, but no allarm, renault retro fit a thatcham alarm when the car enters the uk, i rung at least 10 insurance companies trying to cover my new 53 reg sport, bought thru broker, full uk spec,(no cat 1 alarm) 3 year warrenty blah blah! it didnt make the slight bit of difference to the insurancer as the import is actually an unmodifed from the factory car if you want to get picky about it. renault uk actually modify the car . I paid £515 fully comp with direct line, and saved nearly 3 grand on list price, i will be the first registered keeper, and am going to fit a cat 1 alarm for about £250 - when i sell the car, I will be selling it as a fully uk dealer spec model, no one will be able to tell any difference that it wasnt brought in to the uk by a dealer, and I aint going to tell them!!!
