Well there goes the Cambelt.......

Probable cambelt snap as I was driving this morning (decelerating up to a roundabout)........b*llocks. Thought I'd stalled it so stupidly tried to start it, and it aint happy.

Got recovered and now sat in the garage at home ready for a 'new' engine....well a 2nd hand one anyhow. Will strip it down over the weekend to diagnose as it might be something cheaper.............I hope.

Sad :'(

Had the car 2 and a half years, and it had its belts changed 6 months before I bought it, at its 72k service as it should have, no way I could have known it was going to happen, and I wasnt prepared to be paranoid and have it changed after 3 years. Its now on 101.5k miles.

Any idea how much second hand engines go for these days?

Feel for you mate, as mine went a week or so ago as well:dapprove:

Know how it feels back at'cha, gutted to say the least. Sorry to hear about yours too.

They say it comes in 3's......Cambelt snapping, Cat cost £230 at the vets and the Garage flooded with all the rain recently. Its not my month apparently.

Seeing this just makes me more worried about my car:dapprove:

Oil is currently getting onto my cambelt and the belts only got done at the beginning of this year! s**t job was done on it i presume as had it been my car at the time i would have got it done at a proper specialist!

Definatly getting it booked in to NWperformance soon now!! :(

Feel for you mate, hope it gets sorted as cheap as poss!!

was gonna say, just pull the head off 1st before buying a complete motor, if the bottom end is fine, just drop the head at at engineers for new valves, then re-fit with a full belt kit.
work out much cheaper, and you also know that the motor has had the belt/tens done. by the time you have fitted a 2nd hand motor, (and im guessing you would get a belt done on that before fitting it?) its gonna work out much more than repairing yours (as long as your bottom end is good).

Had a mechanic friend over today and he suggested the same to remove head and see the extent of damage and get the top end rebuilt if possible.

Have spent some of the afternoon striping down the engine, currently have the left hand (cam belt end) engine mount off to see the belt, having supported the engine, and the belt is still on but has some slack on it. Hence why it has slipped. I cant see so far if it has snapped or if the tensioner has failed.

There is a worrying worn section on the right as you look at it from the edge about 5mm inwards (pics to follow). Also belt looks fairly old, more than 3 years old that the history would suggest. Starting to think the garage I bought from may have fabricated logbook entry, hmmmm.

The engine I was potentially going to buy was very low miles, having had its belt already done. Was intending to buy as one piece and fit as is (but do the clutch while I have it apart) and only fit a new Aux belt. I would do the Cambelt but wont have the money to buy the timing tools (which I know are expensive).

Hopefully someone would be kind enough to lend me a set of timing tools for a small donation for their use?? Hint hint........
