What’s the deepest speaker...

Whats the deepest speaker that you can fit behind the factory door card without cutting metal?

I dont mind using spacer rings and that kind of thing, or cutting plastic, but I dont want to build pods if I can avoid it.

The deepest speaker Ive seen anyone mention was 5.1cm... anyone beat that? (Hopefully! Cause I want deeper ones than that!)

Scott.

The speakers i have in the front doors are the alpine SPR-135As if i remember they are hmm.. 4 1/2" deep i think there was space left too. just take the standard plastic speaker pod out and there is quite a bit of space. Measure it to make sure before you get your speakers.

Hi Dave16v and night.icon

Dave16v:

Ummm... are you sure about that? Alpine doesnt have any info about those speakers anymore so I cant check. Are you sure theyre 4.5" deep? Thats about 11.5cm... theyre some seriously deep speakers. That doesnt sound right to me - are you sure youre not talking about diameter rather than depth? The current model 5.25" speakers are 2.5" deep (~6.3cm).

night.icon:

What brand and model are you talking about? Do you know the depth?

mines phynix gold, 6.5 inch comps. not sure how deep they are but there is a bout 3mm space for the window to open properly! bit lucky really

Hey night.icon...

If those Utopia 3-ways are what youre running... nice splits, by the way :)

But...

Are we talking about factory holes here? Because those Utopia 3-ways cant go completely in factory holes. Im only interested in installing speakers in the factory holes, with spacers but not with pods or anything involvign metal-cutting.

So is the the 6.5" woofer or the 4" midrange in the factory hole? At least one of them must not be in the factory hole.

That webpage says the mids are 5.75" - I think that is wrong - the utopias are a 4.75" midrange, arent they?

Anyhow, if its the 6.5" that fits in the factory hole, then thatll do fine! Theyre just the ones I was looking at. I want either the focal K2, Utopia or the Boston Pros. So that means I nead at least 6cm, at most 7.7cm.

Hi - Im a newbie from Australia. Putting DLS 6.5inch splits into my Mk2 172 this week. They are 76mm deep and my installer says they will JUST fit. No pods required and only the plastic inner surround to the speaker will need to be enlarged - no metal will be cut and the factory grill will sit over the top. Tweeters will also hide under the original grills in the dash.

The speakers will be run by a Genesis 2x60w class A amp. I have cerwin vega V-mag 5.25inchers in the rear (on each side of the rear bench seat).

Will let you all know how it sounds

cheers
JJ

Hiya JJ!

Woohoo! Thats fantastic. The two types of splits Im looking at are 60mm and 71 mm deep. So if theres space for 7.6cm, thats plenty! Man, it took a while for someone to come up with that. Ive been trying to find out this info for ages now :)

I dont mean to ask a dumb question, but youd be surprised how many people ive come across in the past few weeks who dont actually know what speakers they have in their car... so, youre talking about the DLS R6A right? Not the PS6? Cause the PS6 are also 6.5" splits but their mounting depth is only 5.3cm. Like I said, I dont wanna insult you, I just need to be sure before I blow $800 on mine (

By the way, youre not on the OzClioSport list are you by any chance? I was talking to another aus guy that was putting DLS speakers into his RCS.

yep jje172 thats me. Quick question...where do you live?

In answer to your question I definitely have the R6As. I auditioned them for 2 hours running through a DLS CA21 2x50w amp (an inferior amp to my stereo 60) and basically nothing can touch these speakers for the money. I wanted to get DLS URs or Dynaudios but cant afford that sort of coin. When testing the R6As I played the start of a Queens of the Stone Age track which has Dave Grohl drumming at the start, the tech came out of the workshop and asked which speakers I was listening to. When I said R6As, he couldnt believe it. The sheer slam and ability of these speakers to handle difficult passages of music is amazing. Only my Mars Volta CD had them flustered, but not even 20 grand Meridian home audio speakers could deal with that CD!!! Well...it was DAMN nice, but still didnt leave me going "WOW". And for 20 large I d be wanting a mountain of WOW!!!!! (and no Im not in the market for 20 grand home audio!).

Anyway, I didnt hesitate on the Genesis amp this time as I had a genesis b-40 amp ages ago in a Lancer GSR 4wd turbo and although it was a little amp (2x30 typical at 4 ohms) it ran the DLS R5s I had with no problems at all. The Stereo 60 is twice as powerful and has better internals so it should be great with the R6As.

Honestly, I know what youve read and heard about the speakers youre looking at and I know everyones ears are different but if youve not auditioned DLS speakers you are missing out! I know DLS may not have the cool brand factor of some others and theres not much of it about, but for SQ its magnificent. Focals just didnt excite me and Dynaudios are out of my price range for now...Also, if you want a laugh, have a search on the net for Brax speakers and amps...US $2500 for a pair for 6.5inch splits!!!!!!

cheers

I live in Melbourne... thats the problem with testing different speakers :)

Excellent! That means the speakers I want will fit.

Actually, I might have changed my mind about the splits I want. I just heard a set of Hertz splits - which I had pretty much decided against, but these were three ways with a seperate upgraded mid. They sounded great - although the car in which I heard them was carrying two amps for the front and two amps for the subs! The splits were all run fully active from a Pioneer P9R. I will have to live with a passive system with 1 amp for the sub and 1 amp for the splits :) A guy that offered them to me (second hand) is upgrading to a nice set of Morel three ways (I can have the Hertz installed, in custom kick panels with full sound deadening of the inner and outer door lining for about the same price as the morel splits alone)

Yeah, Im looking at spending aroung $1000 on a set of splits.

Yeah, Mars Volta! That CD is fantastic! Youve got good taste in music and audio gear ;)

The _only_ reason I havent auditioned DLS because there is nobody in Melbourne that i know of that can demo them! Doh! I assume youre from Syd or someplace other than Melb? Same with dyns. There are a few places that have them in boxes on the shelf, or that can order them, but Im just not prepared to buy a set of splits without hearing them first.

heheh that is so not a factor! I dont care what any of it looks like or whos name is written on it! :)

Yup, thats like the Rainbow Reference splits... $7,499. Bargain! I might get a set for the back as well while Im at it ;)

Scott, I live in Adelaide and Car Toys is the distributor for DLS - across two stores they have every DLS speaker in a board somewhere so you can hear it.

Dynaudio 220s and 240s are in a board at another company in Adelaide - name escapes me...my mate bought a set and it you want detail and neutrality theyre great. I wanted more excitement and greater ability to handle heavier music, thats why I went DLS.

Perhaps a drive to adelaide is in order so you can check out this gear.

Re the rainbow splits - I hope thats not $7,499 US dollars !!!!!!!!!

cheers

JJ

Scott - Car audio gear has been installed - 76mm deep splits and they fitted EASILY!

God it sounds awesome. DLS R6A splits, Genesis Stereo 60 amp and
Cerwin Vega V-mag 502s in the rear. All hidden behind factory
grilles and the amp is under the seat. The soundstage is high, wide
and mighty!

good luck with your install...

JJ

Fantastic! Im glad to hear it (both the depth of the speaker, and the fact that youre loving the sound!

Scott.
