What are r5 gtt’s like

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

What are the GTTs like compared to Clio Valvers?

Im itchin for some turbo power, but are they better or worse?

All I can tell is pounds for power they seem to be easier to tune?

  Mk2 Golf GTI

I believe they are easier to tune but aside from that, i think they are much better cars. They have more character and have that old skool cool quality. If i could afford it i would have one over a valver any day, even a turbo valver! Mint cars, get one! And if treated well, they arent as unreliable as everyone says

my mate used to have a mint f plate gt turbo, then a valver..

he has regretted selling his 5 gt ever since !!

(oh yeah been there seen that)

I used to have a 5 gtt and loved it to bits. I only got rid of it cos i needed to buy a family car.I now have a valver as a second car but would love a 5 again if i could find a good one for reasonable price.

I always found them reliable if you ensure regular tlc and servicing and they handled superbly as standard and even better with modded suspension.

go for it !!:D

brilliant cars, i had one for two and a half years before i bought my 172 and it was totally reliable the whole time. they have a bad reputation for being prone to problems but tbh this is only the case if you buy a sh*t hanging example. i searched for 6months to find a mint example and it was brilliant so best bet is find a well looked after one with lots of history and documantation and itll be great, buy one that hasnt been looked after and it will give you no end of trouble.

Blimmey - Ive never known any one to be so agreeing on anything on here!

Cheers guys, Ill start looking in to it.

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

Ill prob go off the idea in a week, I just get bored all the time and start to wonder what else I can do.

Ive only ever had a 1.4 rt and a Valver, I only drove a turbo car yesterday for the first time. Ive been driving for 5 years!!

I blew my clutch the other day, so little dis-heartened!

Once the turbo bug bites, you cant get away from them!!!!

Easy to tune, but you must do it properly or it will go bang. No turning up the boost without sorting the other important parts, especially fueling!

You can find a decent tuned and well looked after example for around £2k maybe less. But at the moment the fashon is to have a completely standard one. They also seem to be loosing the boy racer image a bit now, and in the years to come will be a classic, and more desireable in standard trim.

Ive had one they are great fun, but u gotta be prepared to work on it yourself if things go wrong. Mine was pretty standard but with a few DIY mods u can up the boost to 15psi and have a lot of laughs!

Remember they are old cars though and are quite dated now, i swapped my old valver for one, now im getting another valver because they are pretty similar speed wise in standard form, but the clio is more refined.

I think everyone should own one at some point

A standard 5 really isnt that quick - i was a little shocked when my mate took me out in his - then he chucked it in for one that had been tuned to 260bhp! WAs really really fast - destoryd an integra type R who wasnt best pleased - however he sold that month later and it broke down a week later - the whole engine had been proffesionally tuned - all colour coded - strtt braces - etc, just goes to show that they probably arent built for major modding.....

Mint ones are great, better than a valver.

The power (and more importantly torque) can be awesome, and they handle pretty well too.

If you can find a really good one they are great fun, but I wouldnt be prepared to spend the kind of money to make it so good on one though.

arent built for major modding? they are probly the most modded car ever! u find a standard one.

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

Im only looking at around 170 - 180 bhp. I reckon thats within reason?

Dont wanna start having to spend thousands on new turbos and sronger components if I dont need to.

But then, I know nothing!

That sounds more like it matt - sh*t off a shovel!! At least when it has that sort of power it wont be prone to blowing the head etc!! 6.5 sec 0 -60ish....

I notice the parts and labour arent too pricey either, seems to getting towards a good idea here.

CHEAP TAX AS WELL!!

lol,

right might be worth joining RTOC costs 10 quid but well worth it for all the info u get.

a standard engine with a standard turbo with a good intercooler and a propperly set up carb with correct jets, and if u wish bored out centuri at 15psi will hit aound 150bhp, so for spending 60 quid and sending your carb to 1 of the people on rtoc, letting them play with it, and making sure the rest of your engine is fine doing a coolant change, and oil change, making sure the headgasket is fine, and not blown, and making sure the cooling is working as it should, then twisting the actuator arm round u will run 150bhp all day every day, then you can look at other things like new turbo ( t25, t28 or t3) with a alloy or frontmount intercooler, u can run up to and most likely over 200bhp.....

then u need to look at things like stronger liners, and low comp pistons, also stuff like watercooling, but for not alot of money u can have a very powerfull quick car, there are a few high power cars that are on RTOC if u do join look for people like Mart, Colin, Mike48, Sparkey, Bill J etc there are lots of helpfull people on there.

  williams 2 turbo

ive got best of both worlds, 5 turbo lump being fitted to valver tommorrow, i bought a clio with turbo lump in it and are having engine swapped, a few extra bits are being added like t28 and charge cooler but the engine in standard form was bloody quick in a clio, gives it the sort of performance they should have, ok engine may not be as refined a 16v lump but who cares it does narf shift.

  172 cup,s2 rs turbo

a 5 turbo is easy to tune and you can produce a lot of power out of them if you chuck some money at them.can be prone for overheating though and headgaskets are not uncommen.trouble is now that a lot of them are major exspensive due to being done up and a lot of the other ones are sh*tters.used to have a 5 a while ago and quite liked it.love the sound of dump valves thats half the fun.

What do you lot reckon Id get for a 92 k plate blue valver, 104kish, had a new gear box, getting new clutch tomorrow, 17" fox 6 premiers, lowered 35mm by bb tuning, stainless piper back box, piper-x induction, RRd @ 136.5 bhp - told thats good for a car of this age and millage. Got some coloured phase 2 strips to put on it.

Might even be tempted to part with my ice if a good enough offer came in, Kenny Cassette h/u with 10 disc changer, Magnat 200w front Components, Kenny 6x9s, Eclipse 600w 12" sub in sealed box, pro-plus 2x340w amp, eclipse amp.

Only thing is the previous owner still has the service histiry!

I have both a clio 16v and a 233bhp R5GTT, the gtt is alot of fun and it suprises alot of people in jap motas, but for everyday comfort you couldnt compair it to the valver!

The valver also handles better than my gtt although i have 17s on the gtt which affects the handeling of it quite a bit

it turns mine brown sometimes, specially when you forget you have turned the boost up and you floor it! its good fun tho

Nice, what sort of speeds you hitting?

I have another thread about some one with a Nova 2.0 turbo with simular power, from a 1.4 thats most impressive!

GTTs arent teh best for top speed, so ul probably only get about 120 max out of it, iv had mine upto 110 but thats it. there best for 0-60 times;)

  CLIO

i used to have an old gordini turbo, A reg, used to rev for eva and corner like a go kart, wish id not sold it now, but never mind..;)

lol if u had the original wheels or some 15s on the gtt it would out handle the 16v eazy.

as for the top speed, there are pleanty of rtoc members that have had 140 mph out of them, just need the right mods etc to make sure it dont run out of puff...
