What Are Spacers?

Please could some one tell me what spacers are? Iv been told i need them if im going to put sport alloys on my car. How much are they and where would i get them from? Thanks James

there added to the hub to make the wheels stick out a little bit more . 10 quid per wheel iirc .

spacers 5mm or 10mm i think .....
