as said above. Open filter will give you great noise but will lose performance whereas a closed panel filter will give you better performance but no noise.
i have used piper viper with cold feed straight to the ground, and panel filter in origonal box with feed straight to the ground.....i found that the panel kept the engine very free and fuel consumption very good....the piper was bad for fuel and sound was more then performance......so i say panel cheeper and keeps things nicer i think
i know it aint a mk 1 but i had a itg on my 182 and it was a lot better than an open filter for performance
not sure how to mod a mk1 airbox but improving the air feed and flow to the box is what you need so perhaps bigger openings and maybe a few drilled holes
