What causes a misfire? Need retro techys in here.

This is a non clio issue - retro lotus twin cam setup

I have a very annoying misfire between 3-4k and now and again it causes the car to cut out. Starts back up straight away, picks back up when rolling when I turn ignition on and off.

Just back to basics, what usually causes a misfire? Iv recently had the engine rebuilt so could it be to do with the distributer? Or will it more likely be a dodgy conection along the line somewhere?

Would a dodgy plug lead be the cause?

old leads, weak alternator or battery, incorrectly adjusted distributor, incorrect cam timing, bad earth
