Underneath it is there is a plastic piece of pipe containing pressurised fuel, if you have an accident its the fuel rail guard's job to stop that spraying out at high pressure all over the bay and causing a bad fire.
The guard doesnt weigh much, and has a useful purpose so personally I always leave it on.

It stops you going up in a fire ball if you have a front end smash.

Lol...... flipping the V's at the FPOS.... its already spent more time in bits than on the road and despite fitting new plugs, ht leads it still has the slight miss fire at tick over.... so tomorrows coil pack time closely followed by a set of cleaned and calibrated injectors. After fitting the uber expensive recaro seats we are trecking to Scotland for tomorrow that is... ...bloody women.... lol
The slight misfire at idle, if its the odd splutter is perfectly normal.
