What is the black box?

I can put a picture up if people don't know what I mean when I try and describe this but I'm sure a lot of people will know immediately what I'm on about and put me out of my misery.

just in front of the drivers side front wheel, between the arch lining and front bumper, there is a black box bolted to the car by 3 or 4 bolts and a pipe running from it. I can't work out for the life of me what it is?

i'm fitting some brake ducting cooling and would like to remove it if I can but I'm not sure if I can.... I am having a guess at something that is to do with aircon but that is a guess.

I thought this to. Can it be removed or not as I can see it is connected to the engine breather.

Remove it and block the pipe.
