What is the canister purge solenoid?

  Mercedes AMG GLE 53
Just had a call from the dealership to say that it is this what is causing the misfire on the wifes 1.2 dynamique 04 plate.
Ive never heard of a canister purge solenoid.

there's a charcoal/carbon 'cannister' connected to the breather from the fuel tank to collect evaporated fule from the fuel tank. Purge solenoid does exactly as the name suggest - purges the cannister into the inlet manifold, to be burnt in the chamber as normal, when the engine is up to temp

Although I have no idea how this could cause a misfire.

Not totally clued up on how it works but it could possibly be getting stuck open making the mixture too rich producing said misfire, not sure if the fumes would richen it up enough though.

Possibly drawing air somewhere?
I removed mine on my old Chavalier as it was filling the inlet with filth.

They phoned me late this afternoon having fitted said part. This no longer registers a fault code but apparently misfire is worse. :S
So its there for a third day now, so we will see what tomorrow brings.
