what sort of mileage can the 172 take?

hi guys and girls, just read a thread where people seemed to think that 48000 miles was "high mileage" now i cant believe this at all, 48k is nothing surely! i know renaults are fragile but surely modern engines are capable of big miles if looked after properly, my previous car, a civic vti, had 60000 miles when i bought it, 128000 when i sold it and it was as tight as a drum when i got rid!

any opinions appreciated

No problem with miles so long as looked after well.

96k and still going strong in my Cup, although I have serviced it every 6k from new.

I know what you mean. Mines on 52k which is high for the reg but it would never stop me going for a drive and enjoying my car. Ive never understood why "mint" examples have to be low mileage.

My ph2 172 is now on over 82k, and running fine [touches wood]... like Mark i now have services/ oil changes every 6k.

My Ph1 has 78,300 on it no problems, my Passat has 163,000 on it lol. That just went through MOT no problems too. I wouldn't have a Clio that high though.

My 2002 172 is on 91k now and only needed a new horn for the MOT. Seems to run smoother now than ever before

I'm approaching 52k on mine. Engine feels great to me. Its the interior that starts to show signs of age.

One of my valvers is on almost 138k on the original engine/box and still runs great and the fastest out of any others I've been in or had. Just went through its MOT the other week too perfectly. The F7P is known to be a fair bit more fragile than a 172 engine so I don't see why they can't go on for a decent mileage with care.

Standing and not been used does a car no good at all. Things 'set' where they shouldn't - belts/rubber bits etc and it can seriously weaken them on the pressure points is how I understand it - and it can weaken them when they're moved if they've been sat for a long time.

On 84k with mine at the mo.

Everything is still fine. Box and clutch still the same from leaving the factory.

Seems to me that anything and everything AROUND the drivetrain fails.

There are 2 types of buyer out there, those who want to pay the extra for a low mileage pub bragging "tas got 20k miles" and those who appreciate cars dont blow up as soon as they hit 40k and pay an awful lot less.

This is so true ^^^^, the head gasket on the cossie has gone more times than i care to remember just because its not used. A compression plate is now needed as the head has been skimed to its minimum.

All these low mile cars sitting in a garage doing nothing for weeks on end are just waiting to go wrong... dont kid yourself either, it will happen!!!

A chap i knew had a 172, when he sold it it had covered 160,000 miles and he sold it for peanuts, he then bought a second hand 182 2 years old from a main dealer......which is still going strong.
160,000 miles aint that much for a modern car but he thrashed it *everywhere*....now he`s 23 and he has slowed down a little so the 182 should top at least 200,000 miles!
so much fun for 200,000 miles at less than 1k per year......where else can you get that value for money?

Because people on this forum, and cliosport owners in general, are properly fussy girls. Most of them dont use or drive their cars properly, and moan about mileage and a few stone chips. ffs its a b-road tool, not a shiny driveway ornament.

I think it all depends on how its been driven and how often and well its serviced.
Mine gets a mix of frequent servicing, normal driving mixed with hard driving and its looked after bodywork wise.
Its no Rich 182, but as Dan has said above, its a car to be driven....not an ornament.

The engines are pretty strong if looked after....its just most of the other bits that cry enough...including the fleshy bit behind the wheel.

I think most newer cars can do a 100k easily one of my workmates told me a diesel engine takes about 50k to run in.

They'll take loads of miles dependinjg on use also you have to say parts wear anyway so there always that to account for.

There a few over 200k now though without issues

possibly so you know it wont eb falling apart, and also because it may have been ragged, and when its got low miles on it it gives you the chance to get the car run in yourself.

Really havent had problems with the car, only some rattles in the Interior, an now my Stearing Wheel vibrates when doing 100 km + (Need to check that any ideas?) I got it balanced and is the same, Sometimes it vibrates sometimes it doesent. Really what can it be??

Anyway the car is pretty much in good condition Got New Federal Tires 205-45-16 and I like the a lot!!

get that aux belt chnaged now it should have been chnaged at 36k and the cambelt should have been done at 72k.

I woulnd't even leave them that long.

Don't forget the low mileage car may also have been driven by someone who;

• only ever does trips of 5 miles or less
• holds the car on a hill on the clutch/never uses the handbrake
• is continually on and off the brakes
• uses crap fuel and oil

All of which have the potential to f*** a car up/cost lots of money regardless of mileage.

I've never understood the mileage 'obsession' myself. Overall condition, history, and how a car is driven when you get the owner to take you out in it, is a far more reliable indicator of if it's a good example or not.

My '02 172 is on 70.5k and the odd bit goes wrong (brake master switch last week, £12 to fix) but overall its spot on. Its also done 25k with uprated cams and other engine toys and thats proved no bother either.

the gearbox on my 172 cup gave up that ghost at 55k, my willy is on 103,000 and just needs a new clucth and it'll be sweet as a nut again.
