  53' 172 Cup
do ppl declare everything they do when putting aftermarket parts on their cars? i never have on any cars iv owned (i have always put alloys and lowering springs/shocks and induction kits and exhausts on my cars). am i more likely to have an accident becuase i have alloys and a better air filter??!

It says something about you.

It is in an indication to the insurance company you are into driving fast. It also makes the car more desirable to a thief.

Btw - wrong section.

My g/f used to work for a "large" insurance company. It was cheaper to pay out for aftermarket alloys than originals. But that was a long time ago.

This gets asked so much I think it almost warrents its own sticky. Not declaring mods is very silly mate. You run the risk of having your policy cancelled, ending up in court etc. Don't be silly. If you can afford the modification, then just tell your insurance company.

Are you more likely to have an accident becuase of your alloys etc, well, who knows, but just imagine your car is stolen? What then? Imagine them not paying out because you didn't tell them about your mods and TRUST me when I say this, they won't pay out if you've lied to them.

Don't be daft and just declare them.

Personally when i had my modded Clio I declared everything, chip, filter, zorst, wheels etc....

^^TheCake speaks wise words^^

And in the event of a crash induction kit etc would have voided your insurance. And worse case scenario for that is. Being done for driving without insurance and fraud for lying about it. And having to foot the bill personally for any damages done.

So in other words stop being a fool and declare the mods if its a matter of money you had the cash to spend on mods so why dont you have to cash to insure your car correctly?

Even my stereo is declared on my policy.

I've declared everything on mine. Didnt raise the premium by much to be honest, which was a shock.

Anyone remember Connor? He found out the hard way.

Everything on mine is declared, a nice hefty list for them, even down to a bit of colour coding.

Makes it much easier if I ever need to claim.

it just seems stupid - if the cars got alloys and you put new ones on , what you have to say now its got 7 spokes instead of 5 spokes?

It just isn't worth the hassle to not declare mods. You may as well drive round with no insurance at all.

driving without declaring mods is driving without insurance

Exactly right. Im gunna argue and explain why people dont declare. EVEN though its bloody stupid.

Gunna use the 1.6 i want as an example for now (yes again i know bite me)

itll cost me £1200, 19 1 yrs ncb with a clean licence. Now that would be for a standard car.

Timmay's isnt. Lowering springs and a backbox being declared shoots my insurance up to £3400. Can you see now ?

AT LEAST if we pay the standard, we even out the risk of paying more, and the only possible way i can see myself getting the policy revoked is if i get pulled over by a cop and he checks the engine, not that he knows what to look for anyways, or if i have a crash and i cant get the damm thing home......

To declare, or not to declare.

On my 1.2 ive got an induction kit on it, i took it off a few months ago but not only is my car slower when its standard, its also worse on fuel consumption. Not declared, im 18 years old, what do you think theyll do to me if i tell them ive modified it ? Theyll put my insurance up.......

Everyone is right though, driving in a modded car which is declared standard is illegal and stupid, and its just as bad as driving w/o insurance. And The insurance companies do think your a boy racer if you mod your car at a young age, which in most cases, is very correct, its just those of us who decide they want a little extra power for when its time to have a bit of fun have to pay the price. We all like to put our foot down now and again, but theres a time and a place, and young drivers dont know when and where most of the time.

....Nuff said.

Actually, out of interest i went and got some more accurate quotes from endsleigh.

Same car with all mods declared, except the 182 alloys.
Mods include:

Lowerd<40mm
Cd Player
BackBox

Insurance standard is £1250
Insurance Declared is £1410

Well tbh, i think ive made a mistake somewhere along the lines with the £3700 quote lol.

I think ill declare.

Declare it all.

But go with a specialist insurance company. Someone like Tesco are just gonna try and rape you.

I use HIC as they know what they are talking about and will give me £1500 worth of mods without upping my premium. They also give you a 10% power increase.

I actually had a chat about my coilovers to the bloke on the phones. It's refreshig to talk to someone that knows what the f**k they're talking about.

I didn't declare my mods when I was a young and naive 18 year old. Some old biddy crashed into me and i got charged £1300 pounds for it!

For the sake of a bit more money it's not worth the worry/hassle.

It depends on what you're willing to risk. With Asda I didn't declare the mods and when I had a crash I told the garage the car was at not to repair any modified bits as they weren't isnured. At 1st they were ok with it but I went back to complain about the shoddy work so they told the insurers about my mods, I was charged an extra £500 for them which imo is lucky as they could have voided the claim and demanded their money back from me. I do however understand why people dont declare mods to insurers as most companies ask a rediculous amount (eg £106 for an induction kit on top of a £1300 policy) because they know we cant drive legally without the cover.
The thing that truly gets to me is that most of us are law abiding and pay a fortune to get our licence and pay our insurance etc etc yet on TV when the scrotes get caught driving wth no licence or insurance they typically get a £200 fine and a driving ban which is not even close to a deterrant in my opinion.

it means you drive fast?
very broad statement there matey. some insurance companies actually prefer modded cars, as they see it as you are an enthusiast and take care of your car. greenlight if you need an example

ive declared everything, hardly changed the premium and i get like for like on all the mods, so if its damaged or stolen ill get everything back ive spent on modding it.

declare mate,

for your piece of mind, and imagine if you hit a kid or worse without declaring? about 10 years + for taking someones life...

not worth it imo.

Just changed my backbox out, does it need to be insured? Didnt think it had any real performance gains... or is it just more how it makes it look, like more stealable etc.
