Rusty arches, seized brakes, fcked clutches, etc. I think Ben H did a huge list of things to look out for when buying a 16v/Willy, you might find it in a search or he may post it again?

these are things u DONT want - ha ha

Ph2 had the option of ABS and airbag !! Also Ph2 had slight cosmetic differences such as larger bump strips, grille, lights, rear wiper, alloys.

Ph1 also had the ABS option didnt it? When was phase 1/2?

Dont assume higher mileage (95k +) is bad as on a well looked after valver most of the big expensive jobs will have been done.

I bought a 106k 93 L plate last week and am glad that I went for the higher mileage option knowing that its had new gearbox, clutch and re-con head. Most of the problems with it are little things such as a useless heat shield, no heater blower and a few lights out on the dash.

ill save u a search these are all known to be valver bogeys

Headgaskets go so really check coolant for signs and a recent change, wheel bearings howl after surprisingly little mileage, cambelts snap so make sure its recent or deduct cost to fit when buying(excess of £300), rot occurs in arches and less frequently tailgates (rest ok), play in steering could be moderate (track arms £100 aside fitted) or v.pricy (power rack £400-£500 fitted), gearboxes aint too tough and prone to leaking oil, ball joints (every two years if big wheels fitted), seizing rear calipers, all engine mounts are soft especially dogbone Gbox link, the build isnt the best (in a reno way), bonnets get bad stone chips but are well treated for rust, manifolds can crack but its fairly rare, they all use a bit of oil but exhaust should not have blue smoke anyway.

there are others e.g leaky sunroof/aeriel, oil guages take the huff every so often, but if all is sound from above list its probably been looked after. They do take a little pampering and looking after, and can be expensive if u r unable to do work yourself, but everybody who has them loves them, and they have a surprising amount of street cred, especially willys.
