i want to polish my car up properly on the weekend, what can i use first to get the paint as good as possible (get rid of swirl marks and make the paint look better)

  No more clio's for me!
I did mine at the weekend and used:

Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo to wash
Dried with microfibre towel
1 x coat of meguiars paint cleanser (step 1 from meguiars 3step system)
1 x coat of autoglym srp
2 x coat of megiuars carnauba wax (step 3), coats applied 24hours appart.

Came up a treat!

Not bad for stuff from halfrauds! lol

Edit: Rich is the best one to ask tho on detailing paint work etc... ;)

Dan's listed a good off the shelf method as his results show.

The other route I would advise would be

AG Super Resin
AG Extra Gloss
Topped with a good Carnuba wax

The main bit is getting rid if the swirls etc and preping the paint first. The whole look and shine comes from the prep work rather than products.

Wash well, and then Clay the paintwork, then address the swirls. By hand very hard work tbh and never 100% succesfull. Look in to Meguiars Scratch X applied with a folded terry towel for extra bite. Does work well but is hard work to do a whole car as the product needs to be worked until it is all gone with nothing to remove, this takes some polishing on a whole car. A machine polish is the easier option.

There are lots of other options but most only really suitable by machine.

Scratch X really is the best formulated for hand.
