Whats all this De Cat i read about?????

  car? need a license 1st!
DeCats are a section of exhuast pipe that replaces the Catalytic Converter.

I can increase horesepower (slightly) and noise (lots).

So if ur into noisy cars, then I suppose it's a plus!

Decats tend to cost around 30/40 quid for the pipe. You can fit them yourself, it's not hard, a garage may charge you extra for fitting.

As for difference, on my mk1 clio, it made it noisier, but it also made it perkier.. it seemed to react quicker to my putting my foot down. But that may just be me :p

never in a million years is it a 20min job... certainly not on a 172cup.... surely the same underneath for the other sports? Took f**king forever to unbolt... you have zero access thanks to massive cross member and 300 mtrs of heat shielding in the way.

yeah, mine freed up the revs a good bit, might just be in my mind, but i like it, didnt seem to make alot of difference in sound, until i put my cat back on

taken from 7mat's post on renaultsport forum and very well put imo:

It is only a legal requirement for manufacturers to release cars with cats fitted.

Removing your cat is not illegal, and is not a valid reason for an insurance company to walk away from a claim. Although not reporting your mod’s to your insurance company / broker is!

Its true insurance companies do no like to insure cars without cats, but not because it’s illegal just their policy.

Checking to see if a cat is fitted is also not part of the MOT process.

If your car can pass the emission test without a cat then its road legal and insurable.

It’s a bit of a grey area but until the laws are changed regarding the use of cats then we can all get away with removing them.

All information from the UK MOT Test Magazine website;

6. Your vehicle has had its catalytic converter removed and replaced by a normal exhaust silencer but passes the emissions Test. Does it fail the MOT because it hasn't got a catalytic converter when it should have one?

a) No, if it passes the emissions part of the MOT that is acceptable.

So if your car can be MOT legal without a CAT, then it stands to reason that it can't be an insurance failure.

My car is fully insured including mods as the policy states car fitted with a full aftermarket stainless steel exhaust system.

Getting a prospeed and decat fitted tomo woo hoo. ;)

3 hour drive to Cardiff though, will be interesting to see the MPG difference as fitting a CDA at the same time

10 min job on my 172, jack it up, undo 4 bolts, put on cat, tighten 4 bolts, done.

Ok, maybe 20 min job.

Pollutes the atmosphere...now that's a bit un-pc

I suggest a sports cat as it's more environmentally friendly:D

I'm not sure exactly how much difference there is in terms of gains

I do know that the sports cat has far fewer cells than the OE one so is going to be less restrictive but not as much as the full decat.

I say if you don't mind changing over the decat to the cat at MOT time it's probably best just to go for a decat....I'm just lazy and couldn't be bothered to do that so went for the sports cat.
