Whats better ? Windows Vista or Xp Professional ?

This is quite random i know.

I am currently offshore the now and one of the guys i'm working with is saying that Xp is better than Windows Vista.

How right is he ?

Which would be a better operating system overall ?

As i imagine each Windows version has pros and cons over each other.

As i have Vista and had no probs, but all i use it for is the net, i Tunes, video, music, game downloading, word and excel etc.

Nothing too fancy and it runs no probs.

Would i have been better off with Xp ?

He seems to think so :S

I just ignored him and said i'm happy with what i've got (as i aint too clued up in computers :()

vista has alot more "holes" in it but kinda like vista for its apperance and my friend tells me to get xp and put a vista skin on but i like vista so i'm sticking with it! just do what you wnat stuff every1 else...if its noyt broken why try to fix it?

XP is more stable and for the likes of me with fairly low spec hardware it's the only choice. Vista makes old machines fall over very regularly. If you've got something powerful then VIsta is great

What you mean holes ?

Do you mean Teething problems ?

vistas great, i went from xp pro to vista ultimate and back to xp pro

cant say i noticed any real difference in performance or general speed.

xp can be skinned to look more upto date as vista with something like windowblinds.

id say if you got a new pc throw vista on it, if youre running a slightly older one, use xp

I use Vista at home and XP pro at work. I have had NO problems with Vista in the year and a bit that I have used it.

As said, most modern PC's can handle it without a problem so if you have a good spec, definitely stick Vista on it. You can ignore all the scaremongers that you will hear down the pub, they have probably never tried it and are just on the bandwagon or using one of the pirated release candidates from 2-3 years ago.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
As above, if your computer is capable of running Vista then use it - I don't dislike XP but I certainly much prefer using my Vista laptop to my XP work laptop.

Fucntionality wise XP offers nothing over Vista. Performance wise XP give more on lower spec machines but this can be applied to all versions of Windows as requirements tend to increase with each release.

go for Vista if you can! Microsoft have stopped supporting XP now (no longer supplying updates for it)

I'd have to say XP as i've just downgraded my vista software to XP on my laptop

lol not quite...

its true, Service Pack 3 was the last update for XP
BBC said:
Windows XP will stop being available on new PCs from the end of January 2008[...]

Mr Epstein said withdrawing XP licences had no implications for long-term technical support for the product.

"This is purely about availability of brand new licences for brand new machines," he said. "We'll continue to support XP for some considerable time."

Erm, extended support for XP ends 08/04/2014.
Normal support ends 14/04/2009.

It's just OEM supply which is going to end.

Updates havent been stopped for XP.

Versions for retail ie OEM and PC builders has been ended, but all vista pcs have downgrade options to XP.
Makes my life harder when a client wants XP for application xyz as they havent added vista compatability. But its a simple phase out as they did with 98 and 2000.

Also Vista VS XP, pretty much vista as most people see it "xp with a tracksuit" it is only when you start to use it you think, mmm this is easier because of the search options and the OS flows a bit granularly as XP.

From crapest to best.

Vista > ME > DOS > 3.1 > 95 > 98 > OSX > XP > Linux

(ive not included things like BEOS and FreeBSD for obvious reasons.)

In terms of desktop usage, not a chance Linux is ahead of OSX.. seriously. Infact, it's not even close, with any desktop environment, window manager etc.
OSX has every single benefit of using Linux, without most of the problems with using Linux.

Vista is OK. XP is OK. OSX is OK.

They all suck at something. They all rock at something else. The end.

we've just got 2 new computers here and took the Dell option of having XP.

Worth it just to know that everything will work.

Satansofts next OS sounds interesting. I'll skip out Vista

Hate to do a full message quote, but that's one of the most sensible replies I've ever seen related to this kind of subject!

Personally, I'm happy with Vista.

Also had well specced Mac mini as well, and although OSX was excellent, I just wasn't happy overall with the whole Mac "experience", what with the RDF and all that!

Run Ubuntu on an old laptop and it does the job as a browsing machine. Not bothered about owt else on it.

Thanks.
It makes my comment look better when you have clowns like KDF and Mike_182 posting nonsense though, so I can't take all the credit ;):rasp:

I find Vista a lot more stable than XP, I haven't had it fall over once yet. I gave up XP for Linux for 2 years and then moved to Vista because I missed gaming. I honestly have nothing bad to say about Vista.

I think people who bad mouth Vista are usually those that either have a low end system that struggles to run it or are unlucky enough to own a piece of software or hardware that isn't compatible. Of course there are those that bad mouth it just from what they've heard and haven't actually used Vista. I'm running it on an Atlon X2 4600+ with 4GB ram and a 512MB 8800GT.

If your system is of a high spec (decent dual core, at least 2gb 800mhz DDR2 etc) then Vista outperforms XP easily due to its RAM management. I have vista on my quad core system and it runs like an absolute dream, miles better than XP on there. However on my works computer I wouldn't dream of putting vista on because its a low spec and vista would kill it (in fact i tried it and it was dog slow).

I've never had a better desktop experience than on my Linux systems.

I hate OSX as it tries to simplify everything. Which is fine for some folk, but not me.

:dapprove:

I wanted an old-skool KDF rant.. :(

Like I said, different stuff, different people, different uses, different experience.

Hmmmm I read that as...

Vista, greater than ME, greater than DOS, greater than 3.1, etc.

You sure ;)

XP is better for business, however I like Vista for home, it's pretty, and never had a problem with it.

What do you mean sorted?

Ok till there is some good comments about it, lol, i no it will work fine for some and not others, i had Windows ME and no one could get it to work properly, like i say its only from what ive heard from other people

There's a thread full of them here...

I love it, I think it's a much-needed change to the old Windows 95 layout. And very reliable IMO.

Both XP and Vista are very good O/S's imo. Certainly Vista32 seems a lot more happy from a gaming point of view than Vista64 does - if you dabble in SLi, that is. But then again, the issues of Windows XP64 were never really given the chance to be sorted out (and probably because it was simply Windows 2003 x64 Server in disguise!)

For the simple fact that the vast majority of use for my PC at home is for games - I see absolutely no reason to use Vista at all, currently. It's nice to chuck a CD or DVD into the drive when installed with XP32 and know that the game will install without the need of admin rights changes, audio adaptions, etc.

I'd say my PC spec is above average, but certainly not cutting edge. However, the performance difference on a fresh XP install compared to a Vista Ultimate one is quite scary. XP is rapid - far more so than Vista - and that to me is important.

Until DX10 titles get dumped on us en masse, I think I'll stick to XP.

For the record - talk about going full circle! :)

XP32 -> XP64 -> Vista x64 -> Vista x32 -> XP32.

D.
