Whats the best way to paint the 2.0 door badges ?



I am gonna have a go at painting my 2.0 door badges :)

My plan is a s follows,

I was gonna rub them back with 100-150 grit (i think this will be ok) :S wet and dry sandpaper to key them.

Then prime them with plastic primer a few times.

Then rub them down again with wet and dry to get rd of rough bits.

Then paint them 2 or 3 times in the colour or my choice and the rub them down again to get rid of rough bits.

Then onto Lacquering them.

Do these steps sound about right when coming to paint them ?

Or can anyone else suggest some useful tips ?

I tend to spray the laquer on while the final colour coat is still wet, this stops 'orange peel' forming in the paint, and any that does appear will just be in the laquer and can be polished out after.

I may be doing it completely wrong, i'm sure final maxim will put me right

100-150 grit is way too aggressive, the 2.0 16 valve badges are pretty smooth so just need a rough keying up. Prices I charge depends on what colours your having, normally around 15 quid plus postage however (if you want the lettering painting in).

Laquering onto a wet finish is good, if you dont paint the lettering in. If you laquer over the wet lettering you get 'paint drag' where the edges of the lettering contract and look messy. Laqeur in a warm place (if its a sunny day in the sun is ideal) start with a rough dusting and then put a few thick coats on.

What kinda grit rating on wet and dry paper do you reccomend mate ?

If i wanted to paint the lettering, how do you think the lacquer would turn out ?

800 is the harshest i'd use. the laquer would be find, i never apply laquer to a wet top coat and i can always get them pretty much orange peel free

as for prepping the plastics id probably use anything higher than P320 dry or P600-P1200 wet). whatever paper you got lying about really, doesnt really matter pre primer (unless its really coarse paper then you should drop down a grade)

prep the primer with P800/P1000 or P1200 wetordry.

dont really understand what you mean by orange peel forming in the paint dude?

just dust on your basecoat, build it up til the colours right, whether it takes 2 coats or 20 coats, dust it, let it dry, keep building it. if you get any crap in it, just dry it off and give it a wetflat with some wetordry P800/P1000/P1200 and dust a bit more on.

let it dry, should be ready to laquer in 10-15 minutes. 5 minutes with ahot air gun.

then the laquer i tend to put a 3/4 wet coat on first, then a few full wet ones.

aint no right/wrong way with most things, just whatever works best

Do the door badges just pop on/off then? I might pick up some from egay and have a go myself when I do my wheels :)
