What's this for?

either side of the roof on my 172, but only at the rear there are inserts.

you can kinda see them in this pic... but what are they for?

They are for roof bars and yes they come off. Be warned they bend easily.

the front roof bars will go between the top of the door and the roof.

It's because renault didn't want to design a sperate roof for 3 and 5 door models.

How do they come off?? It slides to a certain point then stops, won't lift off or anything...

I don't think they arse supposed to come off.

Like I said further up they are there to fill the void where on the 5 door models the door fits flush with the roofline.
