Whats your favourite Mac shortcut?

  Rusty Cup
As we all know Mac love there shortcuts and there is often 2 or 3 ways of preforming any 1 operation. Im hoping we can use this thread to widen peoples awareness of shortcuts that may help in day to day usage of your Mac.

A few of my favourites are:-

cmd, shift, 4 - Gives screen shot but of user defined area

hold shift whilst minimising a window - minimises in slow motion

ctrl, alt, cmd, 8 - inverses all colour on screen

The f button that makes all your windows zoom small so that you can see them all at once and select any one of them. I think it's f10 but can't swear to it because as with most keyboard shortcuts I do them on autopilot.

I believe its known as "Expose" very useful good call. I have it set as my mouse side buttons, its a close call between that and Application switcher.

Those of you who use Exposé, hold down shift at the same time for Slow Motion, pretty cool....not really time saving though.

I have my F3 (all windows) setup with Exposé to moving the cursor to the bottom left of the screen activates it, and the right side for spaces. Works a treat and speeds up my work flow no end.

Can you speed it up and slow it down while it minimises? Maybe frame by frame? That would be awesome. When I minimise a window in Windows, I just hate the way it minimises and gets the f'cuk out my way when I need it to. You know? I want to SEE it minimise.

Lol - I love threads like this. Just shows you the chalk & cheese mentality of PCs vs Mac owners.

Of those listed above, I can see a definite purpose for the screen shot one. Sounds pretty much like the Alt+Print Screen on PCs.

However, what on earth you would use the other two for, I've no idea. I'm sure sticking 6 wing mirrors on my Clio would be useful, but there wouldn't be any need for it.

I always think back to my first encounter with the laptop Macs. The owner of one in particular proudly pointing and commenting on the pulsing stand-by light.

I think you can judge my reaction....

Warning dont do this on a PC it will crash and catch fire

I tried this in XP and it closes the window but leaves the blue bar at the top of the screen - never seen that one before - it's f**k all use like but hey, every day's a schoolday :)

ps. the f3 thing I use at work might be usefull but i'd still rather tip the whole machine into a skip :p

This isnt a PC vs Mac thread its just PC users deep down resent Mac users for having such a charmed computing experience :rasp:

Anyway it isnt an argument that Mac's are better than PC its fact.

To be honest i had no problem with PC's before i went Mac wait a minute thats a lie but im trying to find something nice to say about PC's but im struggling, in fact im guna stop thinking back to when i was a PC user coz its making me feel dirty.

It will be a dark dark day if i ever have to go back to using a Fisher Price operating system like XP or Vista.

You all probably know this one but hey ho.

On any file type, highlight it and press the space bar. opens a preview, does it with pretty much everything, word docs, music, pictures, movies. Find it so useful.

That's great, the spacebar, however, I came across the following today.

Say for instance if you are looking at music through finder, you find a song you want, press spacebar to start listening to it, or fast forwarding to the point you want, as soon as you click on another folder, it stops playing until you go back to it ?

Any ideas how to stop this from happening?

Try ALT+SHIFT whilst pressing the volume buttons on your keyboard to reduce/increase the volume in smaller increments..... ;)
