When fucked they'll drone when your moving, cause its just wear and tear. You may be able to get some play in the wheel, get it changed.

its been known ! mainly on rear drums.. on a disc setup its less likely.

front or rear?

If its rear discs you will probaly need a press to get the old bearing out...

Mind and put the thrush washer on the right way now!

A few years back I had an XR3i & I took it to this backstreet garage for some tyres fitting. They only used impact gun to tighten the wheel nuts but I thought nothing of it at the time. A few days later I heard a rumbling noise which sounded like a knackered wheel bearing, I took it to a garage nearby who said it was wheel bearing also. I kept driving it around & the noise was getting worse. I was thinking of getting rid of the car or part exchanging for an RS turbo.
One day I took out with my m8 in & we went round a few garages to see what they would offer me part-ex. I was ragging it about a bit that day & the noise was getting louder. Later that day I was driving pretty slowly down this road & the car started wobbling & I slowed right down & when I drove round a corner the wheel flew off, bounced across the road, hit the kerb on the other side of the road & came flying back at the car. It destroyed my door, the front wing & smashed my window :)
Green flag dude came & had to put the wheel back on to be able to get in on the truck. So he took 1 wheel nut from another wheel to hold it on as temporary measure.
When I got it home I put some more wheel nuts in & decided to drive it to see if it would go, so i could park it in the drive.
The was no noise at all from the wheel. There was nothing wrong with the bearing & the noise had just been from the wheel not put on correctly.
And i was there driving this thing round at speeds of 70+ with the dodgy wheel. If it had come off at them speeds I would have ended up in a bad state & could have died.

So moral of the story is, get your wheel sorted out if it's making a bad noise & don't just think it could be a bearing or whatever. You may regret not getting it sorted out.

IF you dont know what your doing then take it to a garage its not somthing you would wanna attempt without the know...

My nearside rear bearing went a few weeks ago. As someone said, it's just a wear and tear thing, but does need fixing pronto. Mine started very quietly on a Wednesday and by Friday night it sounded horrible. It makes a whirring noise and at first it sounded as though it could be the exhaust. But the note changes as you go faster and slower in the way only something in the drivetrain could.

I only have a basic knowledge of car mechanical so my step dad and his mate looked at it and confirmed it was the bearing. So I got it sorted at my local mechanics straight away. It cost me £90.

Just read your story, fark that !!

+1 although this is the dude who bought a car a while ago needing a cambelt change & has err, left it.

pisses me rite of this does, i dont wanna spend my hard earned money on cambelts and bearings

Well the bearing is prio for your safety, i.e. it wouldn't pass an MOT with a dodgy wheel.
The Cam belt is upto you whether to change it or not. It's not really a safety thing, just your engine won't go too well if it snapped.

its got to be done though

the amount of money i have spent on my 1.2 is sickening just to keep it on the road

both my rear bearing are totally fucked and have been for the last 1k miles (they are now unbareable so am having both replaced next week)

you shouldnt have bought a car then!its called SERVICING!its needed.i wouldnt wanna buy a car from you!

correct mat a bearing is pretty easy to do mate hardest part is the casing because its pressed in ,

it will start wooing then wooshing then a ticking niose and that will get louder and pretty nasty sounding and then will collapse youll tell if its gone then as it should drop little

Mine got to the collapse stage....When I took the hub apart the bearing just fell all over the place

went the garage before work today and got quote 120 quid to sort this wheel bearing out. Is that a good price? I thought it was abit steep... tbh

yeah most of that will be their labour charge, it will differ depending on the garage, get a couple more quotes and then decide which monkey you would rather fked around with your car. Cheapest quote is not always the best bet imo.
