Wheel bearings

Think I've got a wheel bearing gone - am getting a sort of 'hollow' droning noise when I get above 20 mph.

Is this going to do any damge if I don't get it changed imediately? Or will it just drive me mad?

needs doing asap, if its load enuff to hear like that. Does it sound like the rear, they are quite common

Cheers for quick replies.

I jacked up each side and both rears seemed to be making a noise, but it sounded to me more like the pads just lightly touching the discs when spinning by hand. Is that what I should expect?

best to leave the car on the ground, take off the hanbrake but leave it in gear and give the back wheels a good hard wobble. if they have movement then the wheel bearings need done. i just done one last week, as said previously, the back ones are quite common

I drove 800 miles with a fecked wheel bearing, was fine.

They'll just get worse over time but they will eventually fail which isn't the best idea to let them get to that state.

You should be able to find some play in the knackered one(s) if you shake the wheel with it off the deck.

the thing about bearings is they might do 2000 miles in that state or they might seize after 100.
I worked out which mine was my using some mates in the boot to weight down each corner. Worked out that it had to be the front left as the noise stopped round left hand bends.

Removed the hub myself and took it to a garage to press in (dont do bearings without the right press).
easy and cheap

Well it could just be very dry. Unless you have brand new discs then I'd suggest get new discs as well

I think mine's just the left hand too. I'd rather just change one bearing than both discs if I can - how would I tell if the discs need changing? They don't look corroded at all...
