Wheels, tyres and running costs..

  Pink & Blue 182, JDM DC2

This is a bit of a moan for me at the moment but I see it so often I have to say its driving me mad.

I see alot of people on here who upgrade their wheel sizes to say 17s or 18s without sitting down and thinking about the costs of tyres.

Fair enough you can buy a set of 17s for £500 or so in the for sale section, yet people forget to realise how much a 17" tyre is. Maybe I am the only one who looks at this, but a 205x45x16 RRP is about £100 fitted. Thats only a 16" Goodyear GSD3. The new 182 exalto 2 tyes are over £100 each, they re 16s too.

I think people need to think before they buy and not be influenced by peer pressure into buying nice big fat wheels and tyres without realising that bigger = more expensive!

Also - brakes.... lets just think about this a moment. When you need to stop you need brakes. So seriously, its very important. You press the middle pedal and ta-da your car stops. Simple but worn or damaged brakes are as dangerous as it gets.

If you cant afford to maintain your car you should seriously consider whether you are owning the right car.

I replaced the disks and pads all round on my Cup recently and got very little change from £400, the same goes for tyres.

Cheap brakes, cheap tyres = death trap. Lets just think about our priorities.

/end rant.

Tyres for 16" wheels tend to be more expensive because they are less common.... or were.

More and more cars are coming with 16" wheels as standard now.

I think I paid about £60 a corner for 205/40/17 Toyo T1-S for my 172. Not too bad really. Set of front pads direct from Tar-ox about £55, which is expensive, but they do last well. Never wore the discs out in 33,000 miles.

Theres no way Id pay £100+ for 16" Exaltos, and I dont give a toss whether Renault say they were developed specifically for the car (they seem to say that about all their tyres!)

Not looking forward to buying tyres for the Vee though I must admit.

Im not saying people shouldnt have 17s - Darth read my topic again. What Im saying is people need to THINK before buying them as they are expensive no matter how many new cars come with them. Your still looking at around £100 per tyre on average.

Sorry i see now, I defo agree with what you said about tyres and brakes though.

I personally wouldnt get 17s again on my clio anyway, 15s or 16s is the way to go with a standard looking car.

Totally agree with CupCake...

I might even get a set of black 15s for track fun, as long as they go over the brakes, and dont bugger anything up - makes perfect sense, and lowers the cost of fun:devilish:.

PS Should I bring a set of spare pads for the ring? (done 5k on them so far).

my mates laughed when i said i paid £96 each for my two front changed the other week on my 17"s

they said you should have got so on so to get you some for 30 quid each lol

Hance why im running 15s instead of the std 14s and hence why i sodl my 14s and brought a set of 15s for track use...and it still costs me about £60 a corner for F1s

I dont think there is an awful lot in it price wise between a 205/45/R16 and a 205/40R17 so Im not sure I agree with you.

I think its more a case of it costs more if you drive like a moron not what size wheels you have!

You pay for what you get, not get for what you pay! The bigger the wheels the bigger the cost for tyres......

Shop around and youll see some interesting variances!

I was looking at anwhere from £600-£800 per set on the Mondeo!!!

The last tyres I bought for my Cup were brand new, and cost £130 for 4!!!
