Its the bottom of the steering column, don't think it can be welded in situe I think it has to come out although i'm not sure.

Drivers footwell, underneath the black plastic boot where it goes through the bulkhead.

Pull the boot of and you will see it, and yes it can be welded in situe, just watch out you dont set light to the carpet :D

Has to be welded mate, not that hard and tbh might as well take the column out to do a proper job isn't difficult to do.

No it doesnt have to be welded, you can actually stuff a load of resin stuff like TigerSeal into the joint and let it harden, i know someone who has done that and its been fine so far (5000 miles i think).

But welding is the option that you know will last forever.

oh rite!ahh the joys of bein a valver owner!

yes mate tell me about it! i have spend £300 in the last week but i suppose that was for uprated brakes, but £100 of that was just labour on a wheel bearing change!

also my car is a thirsty f**ker on the optimax! its killing my overdraft! lol

i was actually thinking this morning of selling up for something newer and cheaper to run! :(

You can bodge it for a few weeks like i did i crammed a few nails into the gaps . I got it sorted as soon as i went home as i was at uni and couldnt afford to get it welded at the time.
My mate welded mine its a 5 minute job, its not worth risking your safety just bodging it so get it sorted properly, feels so solid now compared to before :)

do you have to make sure its all alligned or can you just weld it however? im gonna need to get my tracking done after anyway so i suppose it wont matter if it is a bit out!

Just centre your steering wheel and wheels and weld away, doesn't have to be neat as long as you fill the gaps on each side. Keep a bucket of water by your side :rasp:

i welded mine last week just did it with a stick welder done it on the car no worries just tack it (or get someone to ) then weld a bit turn the steering wheel then weld a bit more ectect! took 15 mins made it 100% better i could'nt beleve i was driving with so much play,it was all over the place. just put something down so you dont burn the carpet ect.

You can pick up columns pretty cheap just change it over? No point botching it as it isnt a difficult thing to take out/weld or jus replace.
