Where's the ABS when you need it?

  DC5
Just had my first major incident where I missed not having ABS for the first time.

Coming home from work on the M42 and the car in front of me brakes hard and is swerving all over the road, this causing me to slam my brakes on. I locked up big time I was quickly sliding towards the car in front. Luckily I managed to think quickly and came off the brakes and then reapplied them as I was inches away from the rear bumper of the car in front of me.

Looked in my rear view mirror to see the car behind me frantically trying to get in to the middle lane through a cloud of tyre smoke.

Needed a change of underwear afterwards.

All this due to people in front obviously rubber necking at a car on the hard shoulder that was towing a trailer, and the car on the trailer had obviously slipped off some how as it was kind of half on the trailer and half off.

ah yes... the time of year is upon us when we get all the "I crashed my Cup" posts... :dead:

I had a few close calls when I had mine, it was actually one of the reasons I sold it

Luckily I am not posting the "I crashed my Cup" thread just yet.

I am planning on getting rid in the new year, so fingers crossed I won't have to post it. Made it through last winter without any problems, so no reason why I should have to worry about this one.

I also had a scare today. Left turn, rain, may have stepped on the brake a bit during the turn, swerve left, swerve right, back on track. Heart pumping :f

Didn't make use of the ABS, though. So... is this off-topic? :quiet:

Cheers,
J.

Glad you saved it mate - unexpected lock-ups can easily make you panic and pucker up!

Have you ever thought of looking beyond the car immediately in front of you when driving on the motorway? It's a good practice to get into, and would have meant your incident would not have happened.

i had advanced driving course for work, and the above is good advise. I also remember them telling me that when your turning right, accross traffic, 90% of people lock the steering to the right whilst waiting for oncomming traffic to clear.... (i used to) but then if your smacked from behind, your shunted into the oncomming traffic. So keep the steering stright

I do a few hundred miles a week motorway driving, and like to think I am a good driver. I am normally always looking several cars in front to monitor the traffic. However, this was over a crest / hill, so couldn't really see any further than the car in front.
