Cheers Jon, but the sender? The car is on 70K and it hasn't been changed, the Renault techie said it would be changed at the 72K service next month?

  Lots of Alfas
I thought they had to be changed at 72k, well at least on the mk2ph1s they are on the drivers side have a look under the car its near the trailing arm mounts towards the middle of the car. ph2 could be different as never done one of them.

So this shouldn't be changed at 72K? It is inside the tank and not easy to replace then edde?

  Lionel Richie
no need to change it until 150k as said, its inside the tank and requires i believe a complete new sender unit at approx £300

Thanks Fred, so the techie was talking bullsh1te? lol!
So...back to square 1 with the problem then!

Nope 150k on all Mk2's.

Some Mk2's have them like the phase 1's most don't and have it built into the sender unit.

Its easiy to replace realy but not needed and at the cost and since even at 150k they can still be fine for another 150k whats the point.

Basically car starts fine and mostly runs fine. Leave it idling and after about 3/4 mins it starts shuddering asthough it's going to stall. Revs drop, engine shakes and exhaust vibrates around faster and faster until it finally cuts out. Techie said fuel filter needed changing.

Coil pack cracked? They usually go on the bottom, they can run ok for a little while then start arching out on the block. Take the T30's out and check it over, after you've checked all the basics if your still stumped it might be worth getting it on a diagnostic machine.

Cheers guys, I think the TB has been checked but will double-check and give the CP the once over.

If you've run the car dry ie completely out of petrol, you'd probably need a new fuel filter, is that right?

Ok, been into Halfords today and they sell a fuel filter for this car for £9.99. Is this the same filter that is referred to above as being in the sender unit? Or is there more than one?

ok, car has being on diagnostics and it's come back as the fuel filter. This will (we're told) be replaced in the 72K service so all will then hopefully be sorted.

That'll be an exterior tank one for that price Daz.

Ok Tom, so there is more than one? In the 72k service which will be changed?

As said earlier 150k there changed in the petrols.

Ist an external tank in all Mk1's and some early Mk2's the rest fo the Mk2's have the expensive internal tank setup.

sounds like the throttle body to me.. or idle control valve..
Either way it sounds like your engine is choking!

I might be wrong, but I'm sure I've seen an external filter on a Mk2 1.2 8v with the external filter, could be wrong though.

Nope your right there are some cars with it.

Freds cars reputed to be the first Uk 1.2 16V and its got the internalt tank setup but as you said there are Mk2 phase 2's with the filter external.

I don't doubt your info edde, but the car is booked in for it's 72K service next month and the Renault garage has told us to leave the filter until then as it'll be changed anyway? :S Are they talking b****cks or what?

Talking b****cks.

Check your manual the fuel filter isn' chnaged till 150k even then few will change it due to cost.

Lets just check the car were on about is a 1.2 16V on an 04 plate?

The 1.2 engine has a load of problems but since they use the same pump and filter as a 172 etc and in them there ok for 150jk you can see unless theres somehting in the tank the only other way the filter could be damaged if with manurfacturing failures and I've yet to see one.

72k though on an 04 plate?

Yeah I thought as much... I knew the 150K theory as I checked the manual and that's what it said. I really don't understand it as that's what came back as faulty on the diagnostics.

Yeah it's @ 71K now on a 1.2 16v 04 plate which is high but then the car was cheap.

Regards the original problem best get it plugged inot a computer but check the tdc sensor for output also check the throttle body for dirt etc as there useless.

It could be tappets, spark plugs (wrong build date internal arcing), coil pack, TDC sonsor the list is endless on 1.2 16v

It's been on the computer on Friday edde at a cost of £80 only to come back with the fuel filter fault.
Throttle body has been cleaned to eliminate it.
