Which Amplifier

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
I wanted to buy an Amplifier soon but I don't know which one to get, I don't understand the term of watts of Amplifier.

I will have two speakers at the back, maybe 250-300 watts.
I also will have a sub speaker in the boot, about 1000 watts.

Which Amplifier do I need for that and which watts Amplifier? It is 4 channels right?

Thanks.

RMS = Root Mean Square, or basically the amount of power the amp will put out continuously when running at top whack.

Ignore MPO (maximum power output) and PMPO (Peak maximum Power Output) as they are outputs that would happen for a fraction of a second before the amp goes bang or goes into protection mode. Amps with ratings in these terms are generally shite, so look for amps rated in RMS as it is true power!

www.talkaudio.co.uk is the site that I visit for ICE stuff - plenty of people on there with recommendations.

You also have to decide if you want an SPL setup (Sound Pressure Level - i.e. aiming for the loudest you can get) or an SQ setup (sound quality - the best quality of sound but not necesssarily the loudest), as well as how much money you have to spend and what music you listen to, so people know what to advise you on!

I just went to halfords website..

Trying to understand the speakers watts and amp watts.. i am very confuse.
Example...

Sony XM-SD12X Amplifier (2 channels)
  • RMS output wattage - 2 x 50w at 4 Ohms
  • Maximum wattage - 2 x 100w at 4 Ohms
Fusion FES-602S 16cm Speakers
  • Maximum wattage - 180w
  • RMS input power - 90w
What is "Maximum wattage"? and what does "2 x 50w" mean?

So.., this amp is not suitable for that speaker because amp can only deliver 50w RMS while speaker required 90w RMS..

Right?

  Polo + Micra
you need to get an amp that has a higher output than the speakers can take
e.g 90w RMS speakers = 110w RMS amp

no it won't blow them as clipping is the main cause of speaker failure

you can use that amp, its not that the speakers wont work, its just a spec for them, so they can be used for long periods of time using 90w. so an amp producing 50w 2 channel (basically, you can run two speakers from the amp) (4channel is 4 speakers) just means you wont be using the speakers to full potential.

Thanks.

I understand much better :D

AMP...
"RMS output wattage - 2 x 50w at 4 Ohms"
"Maximum wattage - 2 x 100w at 4 Ohms"

What the difference between 2 x 100w and 2 x 50w as a amp??

  TT
rms is the constant power that it gives out (eg while driving this is the watts that it gives out for long periods of time) max watts doesnt really mean much, so dont pay attention to it, just look at rms

ps Ohms is the quality of sound...4 good, 2 ok, but louder, and 1 concentrates more on loudness rather than quality of sound

ohms has nothing to do with SQ

it's about current output from the amp the higher the load(lower ohms) the harder is has to work e.g gets a lots hotter
