I have been a Ford man all my days until I bought the Cup. My cars have ranged from race preped XR2s to show a show winning Escort RST.

In my opinion, I would go with an ERST, with the right mods will see 170bhp without spending too much cash. The only prob you will come accross is trying to find one that is a minter. Most are f**ked and their owners claim car park figures of 250bhp! Saying that, valvers are getting on a bit too, but I personally think that that dont give as much street cred as a polished RST.

Oh, and FRSTs go quick, but rot just as quickly.

I will prob be going back to Ford when I finish with the Cup. Good motor as it is for the money, A minted Escort Cos/new focus Cos, looks to be on the cards in the next couple of years.

Hope this helps,

Mac

Well Im a ford man so Id say a nice S2 RST. In red, or possibly white. But this is a clio forum so you already know what the majority of the answers are going to be!

If you want something for the straight-line sprint and its important to win by a car or twos length after you turn up the boost, then stick with the blue oval. If you dont enjoy country roads then steer clear of the 16V.

Take a glance at some early 1990s car magazines and youll see how much more highly regarded the 16V was than any other hot hatch of the time. Frankly, people thought that the ERST and FRST (and FRS1800) were crap.

Id put my money into a Clio 16V (or Williams), Fiat Tipo 16V or Honda Civic VTi.

i spent 4 months looking for a mint 90 spec (last of the line H reg) escort or fiesta rst, as near to standard as poss, but they were all cr*p.

i even looked at a 1 of 50 silver k plate fiesta rst which had been in a few mags, by the time i got to see it from the new owner it was f*cked !!

also they are a lot more to insure, hence i went for the 16v

tuning wise tho most rsts arent standard any more, so its prob easier to find a non standard minter with 170 bhp.

Ys every1 suggestin the escort, the fiesta is lighter and therefore faster, more modern looking and has more lits available, thatd b my choice.if insurancew is an issue the 16v is the best by far though

As standard the Clio handles better and is quicker than both, then the fiesta then the ERST (which is actually quite slow as std).

For Mild Modding the Fiesta as its lighter than the Escort and the Turbo is smaller and a bit more responsive. My stage 1 FRST against my Mates Stage 1 ERST was a big win every time for me.

For heavy duty modding the Escort as it starts with a T3 turbo and has more room in the Engine bay.

IMHO you would be better off with a RWD Cossie for decent tuning. You get power steering, a decent handling car and a great engine. And you can pick up a Saff cheaply these days.

As for rust - they all do - just get a good base car and start from there.

Times from Autocar tests were:

0-100 30-70 0-60

Clio 16v - 21.4secs 7.1secs 7.4secs

FRST - 21.9secs 7.2secs 7.7secs

ERST - 23.0secs 8.0secs 8.3secs

Actually Ben the FRST and FRS1800 both got good reviews from Autocar/What Car - were second in their class but both beaten by Renaults - the R5 and Clio 16v respectivly. The FRST Beating the 1.9 205 Gti. The S2 ERST didnt get such good reviews as it was seen as Softer and less hardcore in comparason to the S1 ERST.
