Which Super Unleaded.

Has anybody any pref over which super-Unleaded they use?. What if any benefits have you noticed?. Have heard that Shell Optimax is the best "highest ron level"!. Is this the case. Theres a distinct lack of Shell garages around these parts though!. Any comments would gladly be recieved. Cheers...

shell optimax is 98ron petrol bp ultimate is 99ron so this is infact the highest ron rating, both ok but id prob say its more a mental thing just thinking you go faster smootheretc

BP ultimate isnt 99ron, in fact its not much different from any other supper unleaded, just has the added engine cleaners...its very good for cars that run on 95ron as most uk cars do..in that case its the best.

But if you look in your handbook, and the sticker inside the petrol cap cover it recommends that you use 98ron, in France 98ron is their standard unleaded and so French cars are set up to run on this..

BP will not harm your 172 and itll be fine, but on Otimax itll be more than fine....I can tell the difference, I tried BP expecting it to be as good as Optimax (so its not just in my head!) and was disappointed, Optimax makes a noticeable difference in my opinion!!:D

I hope this helps and I’m sure someone else will come along and explain it in more technical terms;)

My order of preference

No 1 Optimax (Not easy to find near me)

No 2 Superplus (Just as good IMO, but lower oct makes it No 2)

No 3 BP Ultimate ( Not impressed, defo not as good as No 1 and 2)

No 4 Normal Unleaded ( For poo cars)

Thanks for all of the above.

With the distinct lack of Shell Garages around these parts - looks like Im set to choose between BP and Total, with Total edge-ing it according to Rich-D.

Jesus... where do people get their info?!

BP Ultimate is definately only 97 RON, read >>> http://subsites.bp.com/ultimate/uk/petrol/default.asphttp://subsites.bp.com/ultimate/uk/petrol/default.asp

Shell Optimax is 98+, Total is 98, Esso is 97, etc... there is nothing higher than Optimax yet!

Im curious how you know that optimax is higher than 98?

At the end of the day its all the same stuff and all comes from the same place, being a train driver i move a lot of fuel around the country, was speaking to a guy at one of the refinarys once and he told me its all the same stuff the only difference is the additives that are added to it. He also said that supermarket fuel has the least additives added and that esso had the most added.

Never had problems running Evo on either of these. In order of what I go for :)

1. Optimax

2. Esso super

3. Bp not so ultimate

dont ever put normal unleaded in.

Because it is...

<A name=6>What is the Octane level of Shell Optimax?

Shell Optimax has the highest octane specification of any petrol available on UK forecourts. It is greater than 98 Research Octane Number (RON).

Thats from the Shell website, and basically Optimax is at least 98 Octane!

^^Well what are we supposed do to. Take our chemical testing kit and test it before we put it in our cars?? Sheesh!!

Optimax is 98.6 RON!

From the shell website.
Theres some independant research kicking about as well...

They cannot legally claim for it to be 98+ and for it not to be though can they!

LOL ;)

Just visited my local Total garage and they dont stock Super - so looks like BP Ultimate - Although is it worth it "Unleaded v Ultimate", as there have negative reviews for BP Ultimate?.

I have the misfortune of living in an area where the petrol stations are either supermarket, Unleaded only or BP!

BP
Nono. In france 95 and 98 Ron are avaliable everywhere, all cars (bar the higher performance ones) are still set up to run on 95ron, just that in france the price difference between the two is often only 1 cent or 0.7p, so most drivers tend to use 98ron, as I do when Im there!
