Whining Noise....

...bought a 172 on Saturday never notice any unusual noise on the test drive or on the way home (100 miles), but when I had my head under the bonnet yesturday I noticed a slight whining noise. This increases in noise with the more revs you give it and now I know it is there I can hear it when driving without the stereo on. The noise sounds a little like an electric motor, anyone got a clue what it could be?

Cambelt, Aux belt etc were changed August 2008.

Cheers

And eventually will that fail causing the aux belt to go?

Would that not be replace with the AUX belt?

I had exactly the same problem on my 182, had cambelt and auxbelt changed and the noise was gone. I don't know what part was causing it but it sounds like it is definitely aux belt related.

could be

clutch bearing
belt pulleys

easy way to spilt it between the clutch and aux units is just push down on the clutch while its running and if the noise goes then its the clutch bearing, if not aux unit pulleys more than likly.

my clutch bearing whinns like a bittccch now, very annoying

You can change that bearing on its own if you wanted to. You would have to check to make sure its not the tensioner first though.

It's not the clutch bearing, the noise stays when clutch is depressed.

So shall I just have a new aux belt kit fitted? What's that likely to cost, £150?

Cheers.

Do you get new bearings with the kit?

How long to fit? 2 hours?

An hour, is that all. Well it did have an aux belt kit fitted with the cam belt kit 18 months ago, but that's all it could be if it isn't the clutch?

How much would a garage charge to just replace the bearing? Or is it not worth doing that?

Are there no bearings/tensioners related to the cambelt that could be causing this noise? Just the aux belt?

Would a noise generated by the pas pump increase with revs?

You can buy the bearing on its own but if a few weeks down the line the tensioner could go, or even the belt.

Don't skimp on the belts Edd! Major problems if they fail.

Oh I know I've read about it enough times on here over the past 2 years. But they were all changed 18 months ago, with receipts to prove. I'll get it into a garage, see what they make of it.

Your issue sounds exactly the same as the issue i'm having. I'm going to get a full aux belt kit change tomorrow (i've only just now had the money to do it) , i'll report back to let you know if it has gone. ;) Does it sound like this btw? I know it could be anything based from this video, but all the stuff you mentioned in your opening post sounds like my issue.

I had a full aux belt kit fitted/replaced today and it has sorted the problem for me. The idler (i think that was the part they showed me) was knackered. It didn't spin freely and was making a grinding noise as it span. I'm chuffed my noise has gone.

Had an aux belt kit fitted today at Northwest Performance and that has sorted out the problem.

I'd highly recommend Northwest performance, I travelled 60 miles to use them and I'll be doing it again.
