whining when i release the throttle

Car  monaco 172
I've recently noticed a whine when driving.

It doesnt do it when accelerating but if I let my foot off the pedal while in gear that's when I hear it.

If I roll without it been in gear then it doesn't happen.

Could it be release bearing related or something worse?

Anybody?

I dont want to pay out for a clutch and release bearing fitted for it to still make the noise, it sounds like a knackered bearing just don't know which!!

I just commented about whining in neutral and then saw you said it didn't. Mine is the differential bearings in the gearbox.

Have you tried rolling down a steep hill in neutral or at speed and seeing if there is any whining then?

If I roll down a steep hill in neutral there's no noise.

If I roll down a steep hill in gear with the clutch down there's no noise

If I roll down a steep hill in gear and raise the clutch as soon. As the clutch bites is when the noise starts. But its only notable when rolling, as soon as the engine is pushing the car along the noise goes..

Sounds like clutch to me. I had an RS do this years back, seems the clutch pressure plate was worn through to the rivvets, which then in turn were scoring the flywheel

No one here can tell you what it is without seeing or hearing the car. It could be the rear wheel bearings for all we know. Get it booked in at a garage.
