Ive just bought a 00 172, has since developed a whirring noise from the drivers side of the engine bay, has done 18000k and was serviced at 17500 when i bought it, timing belt? fan belt? any ideas? just out of warranty too!

A common problem, its the accessory belt idler pulley, the bearings start to go for some reason on them.
I would recommend getting it done as soon as possible.
It may be something else but thats the most common fault.
