Whirring noise, any ideas?

  Clio 172 Mk2
Hey all

I've had my 172 cup for a 2 weeks now, must say i'm absolutely loving it to bits and so glad i made the decision to get one.
Anyway just a quick question on a slight problem im having. My engine seems to be making a whirring sound when accelerating, a bit like when a washing machine is firing itself up. Sounds like one of the belts is making the noise or am i totally off the mark here? Has anyone experienced this before? It sounds the worst outside the car or with the windows down because obviously you can hear the engine more then, any ideas???

Lol just thought of a better way of describing the noise from another post i just read, it sounds quite like when your car is in reverse but slightly higher pitched and not as loud. It does this all the time when im accelerating

had this problem, it whines as you rev. a jockey wheel (idler) as said above. the part is a renualt part only and costs £50, labour would depend how good the garage is. not the most easy thing to get to in the engine. on the left side at the bottom of the engine.

cheers for the replys folks, just been reading through some old posts mentioning the same thing. So i need to buy an actual new idler or is it just the bearing for it? Am i best getting the aux belt changed while im at it?

you must be the bee's knees mate, cos i watch a good know garage on here changing it. nothing hard but i wouldnt say easy to get to. alot of work just to get to a jockey wheel.

you need to change the aux belt at 36,000 i belive so yes it may be worth it fella.

no i don't have air con, does this make the job easier then? I take it the aircons in the way of the idler and aux belt if you have it? Does anyone have any part numbers of what i need to order, cheers for your help fellas

wheel arch liner out furry cover by the cambelt out jockey wheel just behind there. p.s. work for renault.

yep you got it right, how they did it as well. hard thing about things like this is finding which part is fucked. i know people have gone to massive lenghts i.e changing alttentors because of this noise.

Rentech changed my bearing in under 15 mins.

No parts other than the bearing itself and the belt were removed.

if no air con job easy as it doesnt have the gay tensioner that the ff versions have should renew the belt everytime it taken off ( renault repair manual). nosluom where you based mate? dont know the part number off hand.

anyone else got any advice on this?? Getting really stuck with it, is the only problem i have left on the car now and wanna get it sorted before winter. I was told the cup version doesnt have an idler on the aux belt?? Do you think changing the aux belt itself will stop this noise or is it some sort of bearing somewhere do u think?

My valver has some fuel rails sitting just on top of the aux belt and that makes a whirring noise when i accelerate. Think it's a common problem in valvers, need to get them moved before the pipes split..

Could be something similar? Might be something resting on or touching one of the belts..

The Cups (which don't have aircon) don't have AUX belt tensioners so its most likly a cambelt tensioner which is expensive to fix.

Its a difficult decision if its clsoe to a cambelt chnage get it done otherwsie maybe when they did a cambelt chnage they didn't(as some garage do) didn't change the cambelt tensioners as there a few and there not easy to get to.

the cars only done 15,000 miles though mate which is whats making me think it can't be something to do with the cambelt. Am i best taking it a garage or something and getting them to look at it, dont wanna be ripped off thats the only thing. Could it be the aux belt itself?

Best get a garge if you don't know what your doing to have a look.

It might only have 15k but tensioners on the Clios are usless. ALso its 3 years or so old now I guess which can be just as bad for them.
