White smoke coming off the back of the manifold ( back of engine)

Hi guys.

When I first start the 172 up I have noticed a bit of White smoke coming off the manifold ( maybe something is leaking onto it) After a 5 min drive it stops doing this. It still drives the same, no loss of power and I have no faults on the dash.

Any ideas?

Im guessing you havent noticed any fluid loss from anywhere mate?

Is it parked where any water can get on?

Does the smoke smell at all?

I'm sure oil makes White smoke if it's burnt outside the engine on something hot. But that would probably stink.

All the oil levels and everything seem fine mate the smoke doesn't really smell of anything. And It's parked up the same as normal.

It may well be a small oil leak :(

I'll get it booked up with Rentech ASAP.

From previous posts I've read I think the cam box can leak oil, i presume it could leak out the back on to the manifold but I really hope it's not that as I think it's s cam belt off job. I could be totally wrong. But they say if it's only a small leak and its from the cam box it's not worth doing until the next cam belt change.

Seems these motors have problems with keeping the oil where it should be lol.

Hopefully it's something minor though.

Well I was planning on changing the cam belt again next spring anyway. If it is this, I can get that and a set of 421s quicker ;)

Sounds like it's dying TBQFH ;)

I suppose it's too late to bury it under your extension now :rasp:

Check the rockor cover seal specifically the head of the bolts, its quite common for oil to seap through the heads and run down onto the manifold which will cause smoking.. If its the seal gone im afraid its a new cam belt and auxbelt just to reseal it.. If its leaking at the bolt heads you can just remove the leaking bolt and add abit of sealent under the head of the bolt.

Might be the breather line to the inlet leaking. I always have a dribble from mine but am fitting a catch tank soon so will worry about I then.

You may well be right. If the weather is nice I'll take it for a long drive tomorrow, and have a good look once I get back home.
