Whole bunch of steering problems - looking for a little advice

Right, I've a few issues with my car and am now at the stage at which I'd like to start trying to sort them all out.

The steering has the longest list and I was hoping to be able to take a little advice from those who might have had similar issues.

Here's the list (!):
- PAS leaks from the rack and the pipe at the front of the engine (the one with the electrical connector plugged into it)
- Stalling on full lock
- Sharp 'clonking' noise from the rack (?) as it's moved through its travel
- groaning noise accompanies the clonking (top mounts?)

I've found someone who can renew the seals in the rack for about £100 and am wondering about the pipe on the front of the engine - is this the expensive £150 pipe that I've read others have had fail?

Is the electrical connector that's plugged into it the sensor that I need to renew to sort the stalling problem?

Any ideas what might be causing the sharp 'clonk'? I *think* it's coming from the rack. I'm prepared to fork out £400 for a new rack but would obviously prefer not to if I don't have to.

I'm presuming the groaning noise is most likely to be the top mounts - ?

Sorry for all the questions but if anyone is able to offer a little advice about their own related experiences/ideas about the costs involved, I'd be most grateful.

Thanks!

stalling on full lock i would say is due to the amount of power the pas is draining from the battery/alternator and is therefore giving up and cutting out, would suggest you get your alternator tested

I had the same clonking noise in my Citroen C2 VTS. If I remember right it was the spring slipping in the mounting cup at the top (not very technical I know but I can't remember the name of things). Was a fix undr warranty with my C2 but I don't think it would have cost much.

thanks; i'm led to believe that there's some sort of electrical gizmo in the system that (presumably) regulates the revs at full lock to compensate for the load imposed by the PAS - hoping it's just this sensor i need for that particular problem

that's a new consideration (joy!) - ta

Henry that sensor controls the revs where its leaking. proberly need a new switch they always leak. it may be the clocking sound that the top mount bearing is seized and the spring is slipping

Ok fix the leak firstly new pipes are expensive hydrolic specialists can rebuild the pipes for less than a new one costs for the same quality.

Stalling on full lock check it might just be the leak there is a swithc on the PAS line to up the rpm when its bein used but being as you have other trouble I'd neot exect it to eb an issue usualy it just leaks a bit form the switch.

as for the clokcing check the bottom ball joints and top mounts etc and springs for correct seating but jack the car up and run the car from lock to lock with no weight on the wheel see if you can hear the rack knocking,

cheers Paul & Edde

i think i'm going to start by replacing the top mounts to see if that sorts the noises and then look at the leaks (they're not bad) and the stalling

Edde - thanks for that suggestion; i'll stick it up on stands and run the rack through its travel to see if it'll make the same noises unloaded

Personally, id start with the leaks get that fixed. Then check if it still stalls on full lock. Have a good look over your driveshafts and cv joints for these noises as its a simple thing to do you never no where the noise is coming from till you identify the problem espically with renaults. Theres another thread going at the moment about knocking from suspension
hope this helps

cheers for that. i thought i'd try and eradicate the noises first just in case it's a problem with the rack (don't want to spend money repairing the rack leak if it actually needs replacing - although i'm hopeful it's just the top mounts).

then it's the leaks and then the stalling (if it's still doing it after the leaks are fixed).

i also need to service it so i'll have a good poke around underneath whilst i'm at it.
