Bought it from play.com for 17 quid the other day and picked up an xbox live gold 12 month card from hmv this lunchtime. So I'll be trying out it online this evening.

No - in terms of a racing game. But in terms of the sheer scale of it and the online content it seems pretty good. Plus for 17 quid - you can't go wrong.

the caterham can be a handful.

I reckon one of the nicest handling and most fun cars is the TVR Sagaris. Its drifts round bends easily and is faster than most cars in the class above. The Caterham on the other hand hits a bump and likes to go into trees.
