If used regulary i cant see it being a problem. But if left connected to the car and not driven it will need to be put on a 'proper' dms type charger.

I miay get a conditioner of some sort to leave mine toped up as I dont use it as a daily driver

Conditioners are very popular with the 'kidney donors' (fair weather bikers) motorhomes and sunday sports car owners.

basicly its like a charger but only supplies a small amount of current to keep the battery topped up while not in use. just enough to stop it draining down/supply the small amount needed to keep the clock/radio memory going etc. It wont recharge a flat battery tho.

The other thing to do is disconnect the battery when leaving it as they dont really loose charge like a normal car battery when not connected to a car.

But that aint practical with alarms/radio settings etc.

This is what i mean. a conditioner can be left on the battery indefinatley.

This is the kind of thing you would idealy need. Looks after the battery in all ways. can charge and trickle. Specialy designed for these type of betterys

A normal 'Halfords' £9.99 charger will ruin the battery

Brill mate, ta!! Will have on of the merlin units on payday!!

Shop around for one. think I'll get one like that too. if you look after these batteries thay will last ages.

We have these type in jump start packs at work. they dont ever get charged up on proper chargers and they last 4years+ charged via an alternator. But they are never left to go flat

I've run Red Top's or the Odyssey on my race car's for many years and that can frequently be stood for a couple of weeks, maybe a month, without any running or any charge and not had problems with the battery runnng flat. In fact I charged the battery before dismantling the car for winter back in October, I fired it up last weekend straight away without having to pre-charge it again. That said there are no circuits draining my race battery during down time but I don't see why they would react any differently to 'normal' batteries when your car is stood.

That's the same DMS charger that I use, tried various other 'std' chargers and although I've not had any battery problems I did find they wouldn't charge these batteries correctly/fully, no such problems with the DMS, and you can leave it connected permanently if you are laying the car up for a period of time as already stated. It's also brought back to life some standard car batteries I used many years ago that have been stood in the workshop, normal chargers would do nothing with them.

Kevo66, whats the longest that you have left your car standing and started succesfully with the redtop15?

Have you still got all electrical items (alarm/imobiliser/cd player etc)

Ive bought a conditioner/charger now. It was only £35 from the local battery specialist i got the battery from.

In conditioning mode (when the battery reaches 12.8v) it puts out 0.2amps so more then enogh to keep the battery topped up/power the clock and radio memory.

It can also recover a battery that has gone flat. Puts out a max of 0.8amps. Very pleased with it and it even has a nice bracket to mount in it the wall in my shed. Just need to fit a power socket in there now. Looks a bit odd ahving a cable hanging out of the livivng room window.

Hard wired (with a connector on it) to the battery that is supplied with the kit
