why does red paint fade?

noticed this over last few weeks, cars ranging from alfas to vauxhalls which are red faded badly, seen an alfa earlier today 5 years old and paint was awful, going pink, why is this?

Id guess that all cars fade. On blue it will look a lighter blue... which isnt as noticeable.

On red it will look pink.

Its caused by bleaching from the sun and also by washing the car with very hot water, also happens to white cars, but doesnt happen so much on newer paint.

I was baiting for it ;)

I thought it was only unlooked after red cars that faded? Seen plenty that have been restored after a good pc ing.

I think it's something to do with the fact that the colour red absorbs more UV rays than any other colour, hence why you see red cars fading more than any other colour...something along those lines anyway.

i think its a mixture of things causing it, oxidisation is the main one most affected at seaside areas, then the way you clean it such as fiary liquid and car washes leaves the paint with no protection

It is caused by the infra-red rays from the sun. As they are absorbed by the red paint on the car!

I guess the same may happen if you point your tv remote at it long enough! lol

(Long enough meaning a few years)

Hope that helps, so keep your remotes locked up!!!

actually didn't some mk1 clio's have infra-red remote locking? lol someone could have a patch on the car if they kept pointing there key at it!

OK now im talking s**t!

i heard that reds made up of more layers of colour and as they are all affected in a small way but greater effect in whole, there a more small parts tainted yet merged together therefore its more noticeable..

note to self ive got to stop drinking midweek....

depends what polish u use can sometimes bring it back, jus dnt polish it too often because polish acctually takes off a very very thin layer of paint, believe it or not, so if its polished to often then u jus go into the primer then ur fucked

Mate you make it sound like its an easy thing to do !

Tcut for heavily oxidised cars, folowed by somehitng less abrasive.

LMAO:lolup:

went round to see a mate yesterday who'd borrowed some car polish from me; on one spot (which he was concentrating on improving) he has managed to remove both his clear coat and the colour coat (exposing primer:dead:) - it's a '54 Honda and they apparently have thin paint but i was surprised he managed it by hand

i thought red faded due to the pigmentation in the paint not appreciating strong sunlight - i guess the technical explanation's already been posted

As said, oxidisation is the main thing. Had it on my 1990 rover :(

Think newer red cars in the last 5-10yrs dont hav much of a problem to this, but I prob still wouldn't get one just incase, unless its a Ferrari...*goes off to count how much is in the piggy bank*
