Why is this...a Q about MK's

  1996 Valver
Y is the the MK1 172 not a MK2 and a 182 not a MK3, if you c what i mean!

I have 96 valver, so obviously a MK1,
Then Renault made a newer shape Clio from 97- till what 99/00?
Then the 182 shape 00-05
Now the newest clio.05/06-onwards.

So to round it up, why is the newest clio not a MK4? as it is the 4th major cosmetic change to the Clio range.

Sorry to post such a odd thread!!

Mk1 came as Phase 1 to 3
Mk2 came as Phase 1 to 3 The original 172 shape is still a Mk2 as is the 182, it was just a more obvious facelift going from the Phase 1 to Phase 2, then phase 3 was relatively minor.
So the new one is the Mk3.

mk's are to do with basic construction eg chassis size/shape, body panels ect. the body parts for a mk1 or mk 2 are interchangeable throughout all the various phases, of course there are some where you need other parts such as, to use mk2ph2 headlights you need wings, bonnet, bumper and archlinings, but it can be done without customisaing the body work. you can even go as far as kitting up a mk2 as a clio v6 using all original panels.

Oh ok i c,
I just though the changes from the MK2 phase 1 and phase 2 where quite large, so just assumed it would be a new MK.

Does a change need to be made to the floorpan/chassie to count as a change of MK and cosmetic''s such as light and pannels only count as a change in phase?

(i think i have confused myself!)
