why would a gearbox whine?

Car  Petrol Blue 182.
Apart from the fact its probably fooked, what makes it whine? It seems to whine more in the lower gears then the top ones. Would a gearbox oil change help?

Ok mate oil will be first point of call. Yeah picked it up yesterday mate, valvers gone

Normally, if a gearbox whines, you've got a straight-cut sequential box.
Which would be truly heroic

Because it fucked

Here's mine @ 40s

Not sure what that is, but I dont think it is one of those haha, car pulls fine and good through all gears.

Matt is it hard to change the bearings? or will i need new shafts etc...

As said Ry it's most likely bearings that have gone/are on their way, and that's box rebuild time to sort. I drove mine with a whine for ages, so there's no rush.

Change the box oil. If it's still making dodgy noises, you know all about Failsport's gearbox changing rates. (;

Gearbox rebuilding is not a real hardship if you know what you are doing. JC5 is a bit strange when compared to a VW or Ford gearbox for example.
If you aren't confident in rebuilding one, then leave it to the experts.......I certainly wouldn't want a plumber rewiring my house if you know what I mean? (no offence to plumbers and elecricians).
If the gearbox is proper fooked, then why not crack it open just for the experience....

I will probably change it in time, I wont be rebuilding it lol, sod that! If theres no rush thats fine, but I dont need it failing like the valvers!

It's normally diff bearing that whines the most, but same goes...bearings get worn and need replacing. JC5 is officially the weakest gearbox ever to be put into a hatch.

I'll probably be on my second rebuild by this time next year I'd imagine :)

I'm getting my gearbox refurbed, for no other reason but to have 3rd gear synchros again!

My 172 g/b has lasted for 168000 miles and this includes many time trial events (where I was finishing in the top three out of about twenty cars). It's whining a bit now but nothing majorly wrong. Utter rubbish really that these are weak g/bs. I just changed the oil on about every third engine oil change. PPL do talk some cr*p on here sometimes!

That the Laguna one?

Seriously if someone comes up with a sensible conversion whether it be VAG or else, I'll bite their arm off. Mega strongish engines and utterly shite gearbox

That's total myth, they're definitely s**t. I've been dead careful most of the time since I had the box out...

2 years on it's still as tight a Nuns arse though, not sure whats wrong with it yet - but that said....still s**t lol. :)

Idiot driving normally wears syncros, which is something that renault boxes don't go through normally. Probably because they're in cars which aren't generally driven to within an inch of their lives

172s are driven harder, so whether it be syncro or bearings they do not wear well at all.. it's just not a good box
