hmm. Normally you need to spend circa £50 on some components before you can major improvements. I've heard hertz are supposed to be good. I've had infinity ones before, good at medium and high volume, but not enough cone movement for good bass at low volume.

is that all round then??

Im sure I've got some phoenix golds in the shed.......... Torch and off I go :)

I was going to start a new thread but this is a similar topic.

If I got some uprated speakers, like the alpine ones above. Would I notice a decent increase in audio quality. I know the ph1 172 has a 60W HU in it, but is it a weak point or will I get decent sound with uprated speakers.

Any decent speaker will require a higher input an most standard headunits, especially in cars like ours and the fact they are 9/10 years old wont be that great.

You would hear a nice difference just by changing the speakers, but you would hear the same difference again when you change the headunit.

I think I will change the speakers and leave it at that. I like the standard HU as it doesn't attract thiefs and I like the CD changer.

The standard HU is pretty good to be fair. Far better than the one in my 1.2 and that was 5 years younger.

What size are the rear speakers?

You can get very decent sound with the stock headunit and decent speakers with a high sensitivity (ie. 92dB or higher.)

I recently installed some Polk Audio 13cm component speakers in a friends Phase 1 172 and he was very impressed with the sound quality improvement (stock headunit). It sounded very clear to me, but I hadn't heard the stock speakers. (Out of interest the 172 woofers are a lot better quality than the rubbish that is fitted to 182's.)

I had Alpine 13cm in the fronts and Sony 13cm in the rear on my old car. Sounded mint with a Sony headunit pumping some more power to them :)

Now I just have the Pioneer direct fit ones and the standard headunit!
