William’s 3rd gear





I used to get about 90 out of my 16V and just over 80 in my Willy.

All the intermediate gears apart from 5th are the same size, but the Willy revs about 800rpm or so less: in effect, the gears are shorter.
 


weird, I get 96mph outta mine... Craggy couldnt understand it either... any ideas? Not sure what 4th gets, cos I tend to keep me eye on the road at those speeds.

iv just sent a willy 2 box in for full recon, the guy whos doin it for me has just told me that the bearing on 2nd gear has exploded damaging the pinion shaft.also needs synchros in 1st 2nd 3rd, the hubs on 1st 2nd 3rd, all bearings etc. and a new 2nd gear, cos the bearing exploding has damaged it lol.

but as its the close ratio box of the willy, no other clio has the same gears.....and hes looked at all his boxes to check.

i thort it was only 5th gear that was difrent as well lol

obviously not tho

but he also reckons i wouldnt have bin able to engage 1st or 2nd with it how it was

all that was needed was a firm hand lol

wot kinda speeds u gettin in all the other gears?

mines roughly

1st.....30ish

2nd.....55-58

3rd....80-83

4th.....100-105

5th.....135-145

the difrences are dependant on how well my car feels at the time lol

is the car chipped?

has it got a valver box in?

wots the serial no.s on the red plate on ur g/box? shud be jc509 cant remember wot renos reco serials are, think they jc515 or summat

2 live, nothing anywhere like your gears then...

1st - 35

2nd - 62-63

3rd - 96-98

4th - 120+

5th - dunno, never topped out
 


Seem to be strange ratios though.

My valver will go faster in 2nd (65odd) but theres no way I can pull 96-98 in 3rd, only hit about 88-90.
 


Tom, im reving out to 6500 in all gears, limits at that. dont think my speedo is faulty either, as it reads the same as my m8s ZX 1.9 and me other m8s Pug GTI...

3rd gear is certainly the fastest accelerating, it will drop to 3rd at 70mph and. go up to 96-98mpg without any effort at all.

No chip on me car (that I know of).
 


I get around 65 in 2nd, I cant be more precise than that as I prefer to look where Im going. I do have 17s on though, not sure how much that effects the speedo reading ??Get just over 90 in third.
 


Well if youre only going to 6.5K RPM then the question on whether you have a chip or not doesnt really come into it.

What mileage is it on. Just wondering if a previous owner has put a different box in it. Dont know which one though....
 


Maybe explained by previous owners replacing the shot Williams gearbox with the first box they could find? (i.e. a valver one!!!)
 


The Willy gearbox uses the same ratios as the 16V, apart from 5th. The gears themselves are bigger, the casing is tougher and the secondary shaft is more durable.
 


60000 miles on it with a full Reno SH with all bills and recipts. Gearbox has never been touched... according to the book. It has a couple of minor mods, although the PBV is coming off to make way for fuel economy.

I live in the Cheshire area near Manchester/Stockport if someone in the know wants to take a look and I can show em... Its still bo like!
 


yeah, beats me m8, no idea... I was saying to someone that I will get a video uploaded sometime in the near future. In fact I could get me racing my m8s CTR, cos its neck to neck against that til about 110-120, with both of us pulling about a car lenght ahead and getting it back (assume this is because of gear changes), after this it becomes clear that the CTR will win. Those thing dont seem to stop pulling.

depends wot u call recond lol

most companies justt whack new bearings and seals in and call it recond.

i call a recon full set gears new bearings seals synchros etc etc etc lol

but as its a williams you cant get the gear set apparently.

still 96 in 3rd is very high ...............and the valver boxes/ratios are difrent to wthe willys.according to the guy whos rebuildin mine out the willy 2. and he rebuilds em for a livin so im more convinced that his story is correct tbh.

wunder wot kinda tims it pulls down the strip .......if the car is as quick as mine , without the extra gearchange to 4th that mine needs i reckon ud be lookin at 14.55s easy lol

that ways prob easiest to tell if its a genuine willy box without rippin it apart hehe
 


2 live, PM me m8 and guide me where i need to go to find the no. Im a noob to the clios. If you live near manchester or are ever in the area ill have to take you for a blast, i just assumed that was standard sort of speed in 3rd for the Williams...

i believe that the r19 16v gearboxes are slightly difrent to the clio 16v boxes too, so maybe...........

the plate ison the bulkhead side of the gearbox mate near the top. its prob hiding under the conduit lol

its a red tag with no.s on it

im from near the manny area mate.............u ever go to any of the meets at jjb trafford centre?

would be intrested in having a look at this hehe
